Nice.
Doesn't resolve the automatic fail though. And, since settlers are immortal when you're there, you can just as well stick them in clean suits and dresses. Looks nicer too and doesn't make the least bit of difference in defence value.

I'm surprised that despite months/years of playing and testing the game they didn't find it irritating that a settlement gets trashed if you're not there, even if you have 500 defense rating and all settlers in power armor with heavy guns. Just one simple math formula that takes into account the defense rating and your char level. And maybe the area on the map where the base is. That would take how many milliseconds ?
No loading of the cell and simulating a battle.
I am fairly certain the devs' only thought was to Pavlov-cize the players into ALWAYS going to defend their settlements: Be there, or suffer the consequences. And understandable sentiment, actually. They sunk a lot of resources into producing the settlement system. (Even if it IS based almost entirely on a mod from FO3.) They want players to use it, extensively. There's quite a bit of psychological pressure for the players to comply: These are my settlements, my settlers, my resource investments. If _I_ choose to NOT run to a settlement's defense, it will be ME that permit those bad effects to occur. The fact that there is a LOT of game outside of the settlement system makes inevitable that at some point, a player WILL need to go off and focus on other things. And we all understand instinctively, "If I am doing Task B, I cannot do Task A. Which the game wants me to do -- and for which I WILL be punished?" It's no wonder that so many people are irritated by what is happening. It's like "playing the only game in town": Everybody knows the game is rigged, but if you want to play, what other choice is available?
The defence systems I don't not understand. How much defence minimum required to prevent any attack...... it seems to be random. Even with 2 settlers, 5 food and 6 water and defence about 30 I got attacked.

I think the point of the game is that you build something in the Wasteland and because of that building you are inviting attacks from those that want to steal it.
The neighbours even leave notes for you saying that they will visit you in the future.
If you want to be safe stay in Diamond City and don't offend anyone by getting caught stealing, trespassing or killing.
As an aside:
One time I had the key to one of the stores because I had hacked the night duty robot, taken it away and it died in battle. I looted the key from it's remains.
My next time in town it was night so I thought I would enter the store.
The owner caught me and started shooting.
I was going to leave quietly but my companion shot her.
The game banished the companion to a settlement but the companion didn't like it and started attacking me.
I had all the DC guards and my companion attacking me.
I had to kill them all except the companion wouldn't die.
Afterwards I thought it prudent to return to an earlier save.
I might do it again and see what happens after a couple of days.
Maybe they will forgive me. Maybe not.
