Scrapping stations ? wtf ? How

Post » Sun Jan 17, 2016 1:12 am

It says if you put your excess junk into a scrapping station it will break it down into the component parts. Which saves a couple of steps from putting it into a work station and then getting it out and throwing it on the floor and then scrapping it.

But I can't make it work.

I assigned a Settler to work on the scrapping station but when I approach it I do not get a dialog to store stuff in the station.

I gave the Settler assigned to the station one item to see if he did anything with it and nothing happened.

How do we use those scrapping stations?

They find random stuff and add it to your work station?

Scraping station does no such thing. All it does is collect random materials or junk and deposits it to your workbench. If you assign settler to it.

BTW there's no reason under normal conditions why would you need to scrap junk for components. In workbench mode, it's done automatically when you build something.

I had read many places that having it take components from your workstation automagically resulted in not getting EVERY component very often, but that using a scrapping station was < supposedly > the answer because a scrapping station gave you ALL the components of an item. If you google " fallout 4 scrapping stations you will find many posts that claim that.

So I made one but, as I said, I couldn't deposit anything even though a settler was assigned to it.

I suspect YOU are right ... how the scrapping station is supposed to GET the various junk / materials is a mystery since we apparenlty can't deposit stuff in the station.

But, once I think about it, the settler who is assigned to the station must bring the junk to be scrapped. Perhaps giving stuff to him will result in it being scrapped. I'll watch and see if he does anything with the junk I gave him. He < should > use the station to scrap items I give him ... hopefully.

Scrapping station is a settler job, not a container.

Yeah, the scrapping station is a mystery to me as well. Hoping for some clarity trough this thread.

You have been misinformed. When an item gets scrapped in the workshop when you build something you don't lose any components. This has been tested by many people over all platforms. What CAN happen but doesn't always happen is that there is a delay in displaying the excess components. So if you made a floor and broke down a clipboard for it the workshop might be delayed in displaying the excess spring but it is there and you can use it. I suspect this is a optimization tweak so the game can run better when doing a lot of building in a short amount of time by only updating excess components in the workshop at timed intervals.

If a settler has no job they automatically find junk and place it in your WORKSHOP. The scrapping station is just a settlement "work station" that INCREASES the junk found making that job more efficient and it allows you to specifically assign someone to scavenging for junk. It does NOT break down items you can NOT place items in it. Just like you can not place items in food plants another type of "work station" that you assign settlers to.

First, there's no such thing as a "scrapping" station, it's called a "scavenger" station.

Second, assigning a settler to it does exactly what you would imagine from the name; they scavenge junk from the wasteland and add that junk automatically into your workbench.

As far as needing to scrap things manually, you don't need to. Junk items in a workbench will be broken down for needed parts when you build something.

In addition, breaking things down into their components this way WILL add the rest of those unused components (the ones in the broken-down junk items that you DON'T use) to the workbench as raw materials. There is however a slight delay in those resources being added to the workbench. It doesn't happen immediately, but they DO go in there.

Example: A typewriter can be broken down into 3 gears 2 screws and 3 springs. If you build something that needs a spring, and all you have is a typewriter, one spring from the typewriter will be used when you build it, and the other 2, 2 screws, and 3 gears will show up in your workbench a little while after you build it.

Any component not used in object you build is stored back in your workstation. You don't loose anything. About only reason why you would want to scrap junk in to components I can think of is if you want to carry it from one place to another. Sum of components weights often less then item itself.

Scrap stations are best used as guard posts, they have a vey similar function to guard posts in keeping settlers in a designated area, and the 6 defense is rather nebulous considering turrets are better in every way.

Scrapping stations can provide every type of resource in the game, but the rarity means that getting some takes a long time, and will never be a good source of certain items.

The best resource they provide is concrete, as it is rather sparse in the world and a very useful building material, a single scrap station will provide a bag of cement worth 5 every few days.

nuclear materials are fairly rare, but given enough time you will get some, better to search the world for this. Circuitry is also not common.

I have a few of my settlements dedicated to scrapping (probably ~60 stations total), and concrete is not one of my big worries anymore, it also gives me a very reliable source of springs, gears, and screws, not enough to completely mitigate the need to find more, but enough for me to easily maintain a level supply of them when I am not on a large scale construction project

This^^^

One of the powers of the Charisma build character is supply lines. The citadel and Sanctuary all have LOTS of open water to place industrial water stations in that can supply the entire commonwealth with water. This allows the player to not worry about food or water in urban settlements with little to no open dirt to plant food or a water pump on. Instead you can focus on scavenging resources from these smaller urban settlements.

Specialized settlements mean better efficiency than trying to make each settlement self sufficient. once you get your settlements in working order the building supplies start pouring in But it takes organization and a little work to set up the system. i just don't hurt for materials any more because my settlers are doing so much of the legwork.

Generally true, but the big exception is carrying capacity. Junk weighs **much** more than its components.
