Need really helpful tips on this game

Post » Sun Jan 17, 2016 12:07 am

I recently got Fallout 4 on PS4 for Christmas, and after getting the first 5 people in that "base" in the old neighborhood I've been having trouble managing to survive outside of that gas station, and place I found the 5 people in. I understand that this game doesn't hold hands and walk you through everything, but I CONSTANTLY get frustrated from dying every 5 seconds. Personally first person shooters aren't my forte, I prefer third person POV, and I really like how your able to switch between both in this game. There are exceptions where games like Bioshock, Dying Light, and very few other first person games I'd play, only because of their story line. I see this game has a lot of content, I want to enjoy everything it has to offer, but I can't get through 10 minutes of playing without wanting to throw the controller at the tv screen because I keep dying, and I'm playing on Normal. Note that I'm level 7

While exploring new places, I come across a lot of items, and feel that I'm missing out a lot if I don't pick most of the items up. I don't really know what's the most valuable/useful

After that one event where I put on the power armor, and fought that deathclaw monster thing, I was stupid enough to take apart the suit and now it's all separated into it's individual parts, now I don't know how to get it back together, and I tried doing that on the workbench yellow thing at the base.

My radiation level is getting too high, so where can I find someone to help get rid of that.

I tried to understand how the computer hacking works, and still don't get it, all I see is random characters and words, and don't understand how to indicate the correct password.

In general, I need an elaborated guide to this game, because I'm failing so hard at it right now and a have a plethora of questions that I can't even begin to even form. I say this now, but with help I think I can finally get used to how rigorous this game is. I want to know what the best armor I could get my hands on, as well as weapons of all categories so I can probably set some goals, to keep me at least half motivated. My impression of the game so far is slow, clunky, and difficult. Slow because navigating through that wrist watch thing or Pip boy if I recall is hard to get used to as I'm always pressing the wrong buttons to switch menus taking more time to get what I want done, clunky as I keeping unknowingly taking in things that I don't even use taking up dead space. Difficult because I keep dying so much, and it's kinda hard to learn the flow of this game, I barely learned about the slow motion thing where it makes aiming at targets easier, it didn't tell me how to even do that, my 9 yr old brother had to show me and that's just embarrassing. I want to play this game so that I don't have to hate it as I do now, and I need really really really helpful OVERALL tips, ranging from anything. Please if your bringing up a subject like weapons or some thing helpful, explain it thoroughly so I don't get more confused than I am now.

I don't know I felt this game really walks you right though it, quest markers, over abundance of health and ammo.. though looking back the first 10 levels were pretty hard to not die even though I am used to Beth games, those were the funnest levels too.

I will say I play this 90% in 3rd person view( looting and looking for things I go into 1st) so I don't really consider it a 1st person shooter at all not to mention VATS.

searching "fallout wiki" and looking up pages like "hacking" and "power armor" will probably help you a lot. That website is really handy for figuring things out that aren't explained in game.

As for hacking, I think I can help with that.

The goal is to guess the correct password. You get 4 guesses, and if the fourth guess is incorrect, you are locked out for a certain period of time. If you guess 3 times and exit the terminal, you will get your guesses back but the game will reset itself with new words.

When you guess a word, the terminal will respond in the bottom right with something like "1 correct" or "3 correct". this is how many letters in the word you guessed are correct, and in the correct place. for example:

The password is: BATH

you guess: SLAB

the terminal will read: "0 correct" because even though both have an A and a B, they're not in the correct place.

if you guessed: BASH

the terminal would read: "3 correct"

also, if you hover over an set of closed brackets such as: (), {}, [], or even [../\!?]

a special action will happen such as removing a false guess, or resetting the number of tries.

Don't worry, it took me a little while to figure it out when I started fallout 3.

The slow-motion thing is called VATS (Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System) and yes, they do not do a very good job of explaining it, unfortunately. When you trigger that mode, time slows and you have to select the target areas you want to try to hit (there is a % chance listed on screen) and you can switch between targets so, if you had enough Action Points (based largely on your Agility score) then you can theoretically shoot at, like, five different foes and hit them all (if you are good enough).

If you do not use VATS then you have to aim and shoot yourself. This is easier if you are sniping unaware foes, obviously. In the heat of battle, it can be much harder to hit a moving target, especially if it's shooting back at you. Bear in mind you can take cover behind objects, and you can sprint (not just the default run / walk, but a Sprint that burns your Action Points while you use it). If you get in a tough fight, by all means, hit the Sprint key and RUN, FOREST, RUN! :)

The hacking mini-game can be annoying. Basically you are trying to find the correct password. The difficulty of the hack usually determines the length of the word, although I find it's often easier to hack the longer words since the shorter ones don't give you enough chances to be ~wrong~. Basically to find the password you pick a word, preferably one that has similarities to another word. So if there are three words that end in "-ing".... then if you guess that word and are told that there are NO matches, then you know that the correct word ~cannot~ have "-ing" at the end, and hence you have eliminated three possibilities with that one click. Even moreso, if you click on the word "Homecoming" and you are told that there are only TWO matches, you know that none of the words with "-ing" at the end are the correct word, since you only had TWO matches in the word "Homecoming".

If you find a parentheses, bracket, brace, or less-than sign that has a matching symbol, then you can click that "word" and it will either eliminate a dud (false word) or it may reset your number of tries. Handy trick that no one ever explains to you in game. :P

As for loot... early on, I would just look at the stuff you loot off raiders and compare it to what you already have. Likely you'll start off with leather pieces from raiders, perhaps "raider" armor (which looks horrible) or even Metal armor. Later on, you may find Combat Armor and Synth Armor, which are correspondingly tougher (and generally found at higher levels).

Pre-War Money has no weight (or very little, anyway, I forget)... and sells for a LOT of caps, so that' sone valuable thing you can horde. Just be careful --- the game will burn up your Pre-War Money to make ~cloth~ if you try to craft, say, a bed in your settlement. One way to "earn" caps is to set up water purifiers at your settlement --- over time, you will generate purified water, which will be stored in the Worktable where you can retrieve it and then sell it to vendors (or use it to heal - very handy stuff). You ~may~ need some level of Science! perk to place a Water Purifier in your settlement (I forget) and of course you have to place it IN water, but that's no problem in Sanctuary --- the river under the wooden bridge to the Red Rocket station is just inside the build-able area of Sanctuary.

To clear radiation, you can use Rad Away or a Doctor. Not sure there Is a doctor anywhere nearby Sanctuary, so you might have to scrounge or buy some RadAway. And stay out of the water, don't eat irradiated food, and get into an Interior Cell (not just under a roof but zone to an interior area) to avoid radiation storms.

I would avoid melee combat early on, as many foes will shoot you while you are still outside melee range (and melee combat is not really that great in this game, IMO). Sniping is the safest way, although that only really works on the first foe --- once alerted, the other foes can be avoided until they go off alert status (if you shoot from far enough away and Sneak / hide quickly).

One way to build yourself up quickly is to rest in a bed in Sanctuary (to get the Well Rested bonus) and then create stuff for the settlement. You earn experience by creating things, and that can add up quick.

Mmkay. To begin with, feel free to adjust the difficulty in the options menu under gameplay until you have a better handle on things. And while you're there, you can thumb through the Help topics in the pause menu, things are usually better explained in there than in the tutorials.

You didn't mention this so I don't know if it's something you're confused on, but it's a common beginner brain fart I've seen on these forums: In the pipboy menu, among the buttom prompts at the bottom is one to bring up your perk chart. You get perks from leveling up, and you can spend them on the top row to increase a SPECIAL stat by one, or take a perk that's available underneath the row of SPECIAL. So long as you meet the requirements, you can take any perk in any order (so if you have 6 Intelligence, you can take the Science! perk at any time without taking any of the other intelligence perks).

Most of the items you can find exploring can be broken down into components and used for crafting - coffee mugs break down into ceramic, desk fans break down into steel and screws, and so on. You don't have to collect anything, and none of it's going to go away if you leave it there, but it's good to at least collect what you need. In all of the crafting menus it shows the components you need to make a thing, and if you tag missing components to search for them then junk items you collect will get a little magnifying glass next to their name indicating that it has components you want. I think this is better explained in the help menu.

On Power Armor: If you look at the power armor frame, notice that you can access it like a container and put power armor parts or fusion cores inside. You can also equip/repair any power armor parts in your inventory (or in the frame's inventory) from the power armor crafting station, there's button prompts at the bottom of the screen telling you how. You can only put one Fusion Core in at a time, but while you're using Power Armor a new core will be automatically loaded when the old one runs out.

I keep dying a lot too. Don't feel bad. Just lower the difficulty level and when you are ready, increase it up a notch each time.

Just gotta pick on this, but the hacking minigame only tells you how many letters are common and in the right place. So if the correct password is "Two" in this example you'll only get 1/3 correct if you try "Top", but you'll get 2/3 correct if you try "Too"

So if you pick the word "Great" and get 2/10 right, you can rule out "Green" as the password since that has 3 in common with "Great", not two - but if you try "Fleet" and get 0/10, that means the correct password has two in common with "Great" but nothing in common with "Fleet". In this example, the correct password could be "Graqe". It's a process of elimination.

Another pro tip: If you find anything in brackets like (), {}, [], <>, you can highlight that section of the code and select it to either remove an incorrect password or reset your tries. So if you're down to one try left and you haven't figured out the password yet, scan around for these guys (they can have nonsense letters inside of them and still be good) to help you out.

Hold the phone...............

Sneaking is for wimps and VATs is for uh cats...right cats gonna go with that word.

Real Men Bust out Performance Enhancing Supplements.

That's right we use "Supplements" that are or rather were entirely "safe-ish" to use.

Here is a list of "Sports Enhancement Supplements" that will turn your whole game around....

Buffout, not just for smashing face with a crowbar Buffout helps your overall physical health during those stressful gunfights.

Med-X tired of knowing what bullets feel like....Use Med-X!

Really wanting to smash face and mean it..........Pump it up with Psycho.............It not only dulls the pain you receive it enhances all the pain your about to deliver.

These sports supplements last for 8 minutes! You can do a lot in 8 minutes...........A heck of a lot, but man these things are powerful and you can craft them so there is really no need to save them for the big fight when each fight you could be dead.

Now there comes a time when you just feel you need to cheat and that's when you fly like Neo on JET.

With the Jet you move faster than Bulleetttssss.

For hacking:

Step 1:

Look for patterns between all of the words before you pick your first one. Take this list for example:

EMPTY MARKS

ENACT LARGE

SWORE PRICE

HELPS UNTIE

KNOWS STARK

STAKE TORCH

Step 2:

"Likeness=0" is your friend!

Spoiler

"Likeness=X" is your clue, meaning the number of correct letters in the correct places. You should begin by looking for similarly spelled words right off the bat and rearrange the list in your mind:

STARK EMPTY

STAKE ENACT

SWORE (UNTIE)

PRICE KNOWS

UNTIE HELPS

LARGE (MARKS)

MARKS

TORCH

Now, look immediately for the most obvious number of matches. Here, we see that E as the 5th letter of the word occurs the most often. One of these words will be the first one I pick. So I'll pick "STAKE":

>STAKE

>Entry denied.

>Likeness=1

Spoiler

Son of a -- ! If that had come back "Likeness=0", I would have been able to cross off all of the words ending in E. As it stands, we know the word is neither STAKE nor STARK, as that would have been a "Likeness=3" for "STA". So, our mental list now looks like:

STARK EMPTY

STAKE ENACT

SWORE (UNTIE)

PRICE KNOWS

UNTIE HELPS

LARGE (MARKS)

MARKS

TORCH

Step 3:

Always go for the next most common pattern. Try to eliminate words, not find the most matches.

Spoiler

STARK EMPTY

STAKE ENACT

SWORE (UNTIE)

PRICE KNOWS

UNTIE HELPS

LARGE (MARKS)

MARKS

TORCH

Alright...let's eliminate the next most common set. That would be words ending in "S". Let's use MARKS to tackle two lists with one go:

>MARKS

>Entry denied.

>Likeness=2

Step 4:

Double-matches are usually the answer.

Spoiler

Ah-ha!!! If MARKS has 2 matches, and STAKE has 1 match, I know right here, the answer is LARGE.

S T A K E -- Likeness=1

L A R G E

M A R K S -- Likeness=2

No other word in the list fulfills both likenesses between those two words:

>LARGE

>Password Accepted.

My best advice is try to keep a good supply of Salisbury Steak in your inventry, other good advice is use stealth and scope out locations, don't just rush in.

For things that you need a little more info on, if you don't want to spoil too much for yourself, you can go into the help menu.
it's actually pretty detailed. A lot of people don't seem to notice that it exists.

That is your first problem already. You called this game first person shooter. It suppose to be an RPG.

As for holding hand don't you notice the pop ups and the floating markers. Annoying. Read and follow.

There are thing to pick up and makes you better from restoring health (sampacs) to get rid off those nasty radiation (radaway). I bet you dipped into that water without a second thought. Its full of radiations.

There are guns and ammo, even in first person shooters you have pick up ammo. A weapon without ammo is a stick to be thrown away.

Becareful where you travel to. Some places are alot harder then the others. Stick around vault 111 and Sanctuary down south to the river then east to station Olivia. In the spoiler tag there is a map. Its a special map and contains spoilers.

Spoiler
http://nerdist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/Fallout-4-Map.png

As for hacking pick a WORD until you get the right one.

As for power armours, you notice something in Sanctuary there is something yellow with hooks coming from the top. There is where the power armour goes and sort out the pieces for the armour. There is one in Red rocket station as well.

This is NOT a shooter you have to rush but a RPG take it one step at a time. This game dose not take 12 hours to complete. It takes hundreds hours to complete.

Store everything which you don't need in your workbench at the Red Rocket Station. Once your begin to reach your carrying capacity, jut go back to your workbench and dump all the junk, spare weapons or anything else you don't need.

As you will progress through the game you will find out what is more valuable and what less. For start, you can ignore empty bottles, tableware, things made of ceramics, glass rubber. Among more desirable materials are wood, screws, springs, circuits, cooper, adhesive, oil, hide, ballistic fiber. Generally more complex things are more valuable then simple ones. Say if you have space just for one more item and you can choose between typewriter and empty can, take typewriter. Use common sense.

You can view what materials item is composed of by selecting it in your junk inventory in your PIP Boy (you can't do it with armor and weapons, you need armor and weapon workstations for that).

You can put those pieces back anywhere by opening power armor inventory (R button on PC). You can do that at the power armor station at Red Rocket too by clicking on power armor station while having armor frame nearby.

Use "Radaway" (under Aid category) to get rid of radiation. Also consider using "RadX" before entering radiation areas since it raises your radiation protection and you take less radiation damage. Some equipment, like gas mask also raise radiation resistance.

Medicine perk will raise effectiveness of Radaway. It will also raise effectiveness of Stimpacks therefore it is useful perk to take early on.

Every word you see is potential password. When you click one of them, number of correct characters inside will be displayed (correct by both type and position).

Say correct password is "Dog". If you click at "Hog", number of correct characters is 2 (og). This can be used to give you clue to find correct password. You however have just 4 tries after which computer will lock you out for 10 seconds. Then you can start anew (with new password).

I generally tend to click first word then try to find the next one with number of matching characters computer gave me as a clue. Then next one which matches number of characters in the first and second words I selected. And so on.

There are also hidden character strings in the code. They are always encapsulated inside these characters: [] () {} <>

So if you see for example ($&%#@), click on ( symbol. Rest of the string will be selected automatically which is how you will know that it indeed is the hidden string) and two things might happen: either one of the false passwords will be erased or (which happens only rarely) number of tries will be reset back to 4.

Myself I usually try words first until I have but 1 try left. Then I go hunting hidden strings. Usually there is at last one which will resets the tries. Then I continue.

Early on best armor (except your power armor of course) is your vault suit and leather armor (made of 5 separate pieces). You should be able to scavenge leather armor pieces from raiders fairly early on. If you invest in to 1 level of armorer perk, you upgrade leather armor pieces to their maximum protection which will give you very solid protection for the early game.

If you search a little bit around Sanctuary, you can find military helmet which will be for long time best head armor you can find. Hint: search for signs of military activity to find it ;)

http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Fallout_4_weapons

Give it some time.

Scout ahead, don't just run around everywhere. Switch to sneak mode, climb that small hill in front of you or rock or car wreck which will give you nice overview and look around. Use scoped weapon as a substitute for binocular to scout distant places. Once you know what's in front of you, choose next elevated position on your path and go there. Repeat.

If you discover something which moves and want to find out if it's hostile or not, enter your "slow motion mode", which is called VATS. Hostile creatures and humanoids will be displayed in red, friendly in green. Friendly one can still turn hostile as a result of some actions, dialogue choices or similar, so always be careful. To be able to enter VATS you however have to come closer to your target. Use sneak mode.

If there is skull next to name of creature in VATS mode, that creature is well above your level and very dangerous. It can likely kill you in two-three hits. Same goes for creatures which have "legendary" in their name.

Some creatures are very dangerous even without scull or legendary prefix in their name. Use common sense and caution when deciding how dangerous they are. large cockroach will likely be less dangerous then mutated monster with large claws.

Once you know your enemy, you can decide to avoid it. You don't have to fight everything you encounter. game progress mostly through quests, so you will not miss anything. Once you decide to fight, try to draw at last rudimentary plan of your attack. Opening the fire without knowing next step is likely to kill you. Find advantageous position first, give orders to you companion, if you are up against group of enemies, decide which one you want to engage first. Have a escape plan if things turn bad. Lie down mines and so on.

Sniping from hidden position is one of the most effective ways to fight in Fallout. You should consider it if you are having problems. First of all you need decent sniper weapon. Early on, .45 pipe revolver rifle can be turned in to very good early game sniper rifle. You should be able to find .45 revolver in some form pretty early in the game. Mod it with hard receiver, long barrel, standard stock and small scope. You can do these modifications with any perks.

When sniping, always do it from "sneak" mode and if possible aim for head (or other vulnerable parts depending on creature). Hits in sneak mode do 2x damage and headshots do some extra damage as well. You can kill many early enemies (bandits, ghouls) in a single shot like this. Do it at the distance and if enemies start to discover you (you will see word [Hidden] turn in to [Caution]), move away behind some cover and wait until it changes back to [Hidden]. [Hidden] means that enemies does not know about you. [Caution] means they know you are there but did not see you jet and are likely looking for you (they will give up after some time). [Danger] means you have being discovered.

With enough patience you can kill whole groups of enemies like this without them ever discovering you. Just move away (still in sneak mode) in to cover and wait after each shot and then come back to shoot more.

Before you start sniping, make sure your companion will not give you up. Command him to stay back somewhere where he can't be seen by enemy. Come back for him later. Btw,you can command companion to stay from a distance. Just command him to go somewhere, when he arrives there, your cursor will change and you can command him to stay. You can recall him in the similar way.

You can always run away from a fight. Most of the enemies will give up chase after some time. In fact running away should be your first instinct when ever you are jumped by enemies unprepared. You always come back later while evaluating your enemy, with the plan of action and clear understanding what enemy you are facing.

Besides long range weapon, always carry some close range weapon with good firepower with you. Some encounters will inevitably gets more personal. 10mm pistol is good choice early on as is pipe rifle with automatic receiver and larger magazine.

Assign Stimpack to a hot key and try to always keep eye on your health bar. Use stimpack when it falls below 50%.

Jet and drugs made of jet like psychojet or bufjet (which you can craft) are very useful in a fight. Myself I assign one of them (I prefer psychojet) to hotkey and hit it any time I fell under great danger. It will slow time for 10 or 15 seconds and is incredible useful in difficult fight. Try it.

You have 4 tries on the hack. Try three using the methods above, then stop. You have two things you can do next, exit the terminal and it will reset or scroll your mouse over the lines of gibberish and look for some characters that highlight. That means you have bracket symbols that face each other, sort of like this (%^#@) or <(*&%^>. when you click on them you will either delete a false password or reset your chances. I do it after three tries so you actually get 6 chances to hit it. Most time after the false words are dropped you will only have a couple left anyway.

Get/mod a scoped gun as soon as you can. For some reason, the scope is the closest thing to binoculars in the game, . Don't just travel in a straight line hoping you don't get attacked. Stop and look around often with the scope. Its a wasteland mostly, so if you see lights in an area you have to assume its occupied. Plan how you want to approach or even if you want to. skirting around may be the better choice early. Each faction decorates their camps differently. Mutants have spikes and hanging meat bags, if you not up for that battle, go around. But learn what to look for.

Talk to Preston Garvey and join the the Minutemen as soon as possible. Once you have exhausted his quests, you will have learned to manage your frustration levels. Oh, once you get Radio Freedom channel, keep it on always! Very important information comes across this radio channel!

for radiation you need a doctor or rad away buts its expensive early on so managing that might be difficult for you, look up where diamond city is on the map mark it and bee line straight to diamond city, don't stop to fight enemies, go on very easy mode and it might be tricky but get to diamond city, there's a doctor there so when you get radiation that will take care of that, once at diamond city you can get a follower and that will help with dealing with enemies, for you it might be a good idea to make sure your endurance stat is at least 4 or 5 to start out, also you can modify weapons at the sanctuary work bench so eventually you can beef up your weapons, you generally need materials like screws, oil, aluminun so you'll need to collect "junk" little by little and put it in the workbench at sanctuary, if i were you i would be playing in very easy mode, it can be a tough game but you'll get the hang of it.

I think your biggest problem is your approaching the game as a FPS. yes, it has quite a bit of shooter elements, but the game is a hybrid of several types of games. in addition to the FPS aspects, there are RPG elements, and adventure game elements too. you have to slowly build and advance your character, you can't just run out into the world guns blazing. as you level up you can pick perks (skills, abilities, and bonus's) and increase ones you have, as you level, stronger weapons and armor will also become available. but not till you hit higher levels. if you just go running around the map, especially Boston and the southern part, you will most definitely die frequently.

Don't know what has been said so far (TL;DR), but I have two suggestions:

Get a Companion ASAP. During encounters, the Companion generally maneuvers to get "in the guy's face" = A Good Thing. First because Companions can't die. (They're coded as Essential.) Let them get up close and personal. You, otoh, should pull back and engage at range. Second, related to suggestion #1, get a ranged weapon ASAP. It's MUCH better to kill them waaaayyy over there -- because here is close enough for them to reach out and do you grievous harm. Like death and dismemberment.
