What count as roof? (Happiness)

Post » Sun Jan 17, 2016 12:03 am

Settlers require roof over their beds for happiness!

Are the houses in Sanctuary ok as roof over beds? They don't look like roof, even the roofs in the construction menu don't look like roofs ...

In the construction menu there are roof-floors in the wood-floor section, do they also count as roof even if there are no actual roof build further up on top of them?

I'd be interested to know if an upperfloor is considered to be a roof. My guess is that it's not, as I know that Bed's have to be placed on wood floors and have a roof over their head in order to get the maximum happiness points.

I think upper floors count, because I've used them and have no issues with gaining happiness in that settlement.

*I use mods though that give me different construction pieces, like Institute walls/floors etc.

It's a good question about the houses at Sanctuary. No idea if this answers your question. But when you first return to Sanctuary with the Lexington posse in tow, I remember one of the NPC's mentioning a good start would be to get some beds in the hoses there. Don't know if this means their current roofs are classed as ok or will just do for temporary accommodation. But I would imagine standing in a bedroom during a rainstorm will let you know. Is it raining inside or not? But even then, who knows.

For what it's worth, usually when I unlock a settlement I'll build the first floor of a bunkhouse and leave the rest for later. I'll lay down a foundation, put the walls up, and put the upper shack floor in and I've never noticed any issues with decreasing happiness because of this. I'm guessing that the upper shack floor counts as a roof, but don't take my word on it. I've also typically put most of my beds in Sanctuary inside of the houses and never seen any noticeable issues with it. I do try to avoid putting them under the particularly bad patches of roof.

The dilapidated rooves, of the pre-war houses in Sanctuary count, as do upper floors. My gauge has always been to see if water passes through when it rains. Not sure if it's an accurate way to tell, but it's what I do.

How do you tell if they are rainproof? In my game rain falls inside all of the buildings - even the ones with solid concrete roofs such as Warwick Homestead.

That's probably just the data (rain) from you being outside also being brought inside when you step inside. It shouldn't happen, but I get it occasionally. It shouldn't be anything to worry about.

No, that's an issue that has always been around... roofs do not stop rain unless you are in an interior cell. Morrowind Code Patch solved that issue in Morrowind, I don't have any idea why Beth didn't adopt that for their later games, but roofs do not function to keep rain off as it is in any Beth game.

is there any reference to the OP? some of my settlements are pretty much a camp under the stars kinda deal (no roofs), and their happiness is 85+.

That's odd they appear to stop rain in my game. It may have something to do with graphical settings.

Now that I'm thinking about it, it may or may not have been something I tweaked in the ini file.. I made alot of changes in there to exceed "ultra" settings.

Was just looking around Fallout4Prefs.ini

It might be this setting? (not sure what it is by default)

bEnableRainOcclusion = 1

I came across this video that might be of interest. It shows you how to install roofs in the prewar houses in Sanctuary.

Did a test in Sanctuary:

28 people with 44 beds inside houses; happiness always 87-88%

Built steel shacks with doors and 2 beds in each, removed all beds in houses and placed 28 beds in shacks;

then traveled through 3-4 days and came back; happiness stays at 88-87%

Removed all shacks and placed the 28 beds in the open;

then traveled and the happiness fell to 83%, travelled some more days but it stayed at 83%

Then built a wooden floor-roof (in floor section) over all beds in the open (no walls or foundation);

then traveled several days; happiness unchanged at 83%

But while removing the wooden floor-roof the happiness immediately fell to 80%??

built roofs over all beds now;

then traveled several days; happiness stayed at 80%

Guess Sanctuary houses are okay in game regardless of the holes.

From reading that, I'm not sure Fallout 4 knows what it wants to do with happiness itself. Lol

According to game manual in [ESC] -> HELP -> Settlement happiness topic it says that the happiness doesn't change immediately to situations. So that's why it's a bit difficult to actually test stuff ...
