Some additions of Dialogue off the start

Having a voiced protagonist is always a risky move as you actually have to record ALL that dialogue, but there were a few things that were left out that I feel would have made it feel more like how it should have.

What I mean by this is the Lone Survivor. You were happy living it up in good old pre-war land when all of a sudden you are thrust into chaos and find yourself being frozen. For you it feels like maybe an hour at most and now the world is in ruin. Codsworth tells you its been 200 years! After you help PressedHam Mc'Gravy he proceeds to hand you bottle caps and says good job.

This is where, I feel, there should have been a little addition of dialogue of

"What is this? Why are you handing me bottle caps?"

Gravy - "I'm giving you a reward for helping us."

"You use bottle caps for money?"

Gravy - "Umm, yea. Where have you been for the past 100* years?"

You would then be able to say, or avoid saying, about the vault.

You go from pre-war to post-war in what would feel like no time at all and just out right accept something you consider rubbish as money without a single word? I wouldn't.

Next would have been I guess a little tutorial into cooking. It seems like a pretty major part of gameplay. Cooked food removes its rads, restores more hp and often gives bonus effects. So why leave it untouched.

Sturges - "Ah, now that we have somewhere to sleep and water to drink we will need something to eat."

"I don't think food is going to be vary good."

Sturges - "You'll be surprised what you can make out here in the wastes. Mind you its no pre-war food, but with a few ingredients you can keep it down better."

Anyway, little things like that are what would make the game feel better to me. In FO3 there was at least a knowledge of what was outside the vault and New Vegas you weren't even from a vault so you knew the importance of cooking food, but with Fo4 the transition of pre to post war is fast and your acceptance without question is not right.

Anyone else feel this way?

I think I understand what you mean. You almost wish there was more easing in when it comes to the post apocalyptic paradigm. I totally agree. Unlike most people who went to sanctuary when they emerged from the vault, I actually went south east and came upon a trader near a pond. Instead of trying to piece together what had happened my character simply said "So.. what do you have for sale?"

Apparently my character knew something I did not. I think I learned in the long run that there was a lot I didn't know about him.

One thing I do like about the dialogue system is how your character will say things like "uh-huh" "yep" "sure" and "okay" when you skip through dialogue. I almost wish you were able to press buttons as the other character was speaking so you could affirm that you were still listening. It wouldn't be mandatory, but it would be one of those things that would add a more colloquial flow to conversations.

I agree with all of this. I feel like the whole introductory portion of this game was pretty lacking. The whole pre-war intro scene was lacking in its own ways, but even after leaving Vault 111 I feel like the Sole Survivor was assumed to simply have prior knowledge of how all of these things work.

This goes beyond just Sanctuary though. When you first see the deathclaw in Concord, I feel like a bit of dialog between the SS and Preston would have been cool. Some kind of "what the hell is that thing!?" type of conversation. Not just "go up to the roof and grab this power armor and kill the deathclaw".

I would like an option to disable the voiced protag.

Yea. Bethesda would have just said "People played Fo3 and New Vegas. They know what all this is." and then just skipped over it because all the players just accept caps as currency.

This is quite true. I've played previous Fallout games so using caps as currency wasn't a new concept to me. But I feel like these are just missed opportunities for some amusing dialog.

There's a girl at Abernathy farm (I think) that discusses currency to the protagonist...I can't remember the exact exchange of dialogue, but I remember how silly it was, since I had already spent thousands of bottle caps before running into her..
