disc 2 is blank?

Post » Thu Jun 24, 2010 1:38 am

I got fallout3 GOTY edition a while back and installed it on my PC everything worked fine i had the new DLC and played them a bit and everything worked well.

i upgraded to windows 7 recently and now it acts like disc 2 is blank.

am i missing something here, fallout 3 is working fine, but the DLC is not available, shouldn't that be on disk 2?

what do i need to do to fix this, i have googled it and it seems like a few other people had the same issue but they didn't show what they did to fix it.

Please help if you can, i have spent a while messing with it and i am out of ideas.

sorry i didn't proof read my topic it should read, "what am i doing wrong with DISK 2"

What do you mean by blank? When the disk is in your drive, open Computer, right click the disk, and then hit 'open.' Are there files on it? Or is your computer just not registering it?

when i put the disk in, and i got to my computer and try to open it, the drive just ejects the disk and it acts like there is no disk inside. it works fine with disk 1 but not with disk 2. i have previously installed the game using these disks and it worked fine. the disks are not scratched and look like they are in perfect condition.

when i am viewing my DVD drive it will not show an icon or anything to do with the disk, no browse, no autorun, etc.

using windows 7 if it matters.

Very weird. It may not look like it, but it sounds to me like it's dirty. What I would do is carefully wash it with warm water and soap, and dry it off with a soft cloth. CAREFULLY. When my PC/PS3 won't read a disk, washing fixes the problem 90% of the time.

just washed it again, and put the disk back in, still nothing. restarted my computer with it in and still nothing.

if i have the key, is there a way to download it, the end result here is DLC, if i have to download it i am fine.

Try installing the second disk in safe mode.

If what Starforce suggested doesn't work, than I say you return to to wherever you bought it, assuming it's under warranty. If not, explain your situation and they may have mercy. If you can't return it, you may be out of luck. I don't think there's a place where you can redeem your key.

might try to exchange it at walmart see how that goes. if they checked it then they will see its messed up, and looks new.

i did try to install it in safe mode, still it didn't read the disk at all.

thanks for the help so far.

Are you certain that you are using an Admin. account?
Did you install to Win7's default location or did you install to a custom location? (custom is best/easiest if you plan to use mods)
Have you tried installing in Compatibility Mode for XP w/Service Pack 3 or Vista w/SP 2?

Consider uninstalling, and then reinstalling this way.

yeah i am using admin account, this is only problem i have had with anything in a while, fallout disk 1 works fine, just not disk 2.

i am using custom location for installs, i have a raptor hard drive i install games to in a partition i have for only games. i also use a raptor for c: where the partition is only for windows.

That you say that Disc 2 previously worked fine leads me to believe its not a faulty/damaged disc.

If you have a 2nd optical drive, try the disc there. If you have, or can borrow, an external optical drive, try it.

Some folks have found that Disc 2 of the GOTY edition takes a long time to read/begin, up to 30 minutes in some cases. See what happens if you insert the disc and just wait.
Temporarily disabling any AV/Malware realtime scanners might speed it up.

Try the compatibility method.

See if your PC will copy the contents of Disc 2 to your HDD and then try installing from there.

Edit: Longshot:
Hmm, I just had a thought, maybe not a useful one, but...

I recall Oblivion's DLCs having issues installing when the process called http://www.liutilities.com/windows-process/ctfmon-exe/ was running. Ending this process allowed the DLC installation to continue successfully. You can kill the process in Task Manager>Processes tab, or while running a Clean Boot. Despite ending it, it may restart on its own. I had this issue myself, though it was inconsistent.
