Junk Collecting

Post » Sun Jan 17, 2016 7:31 pm

I'm really enjoying this game except for the relentless junk collecting and inventory management.

I wish for a mod where all my junk would go automatically to the workshop and maybe the rest of

the armor and weapons stuff to some big box or even converted to caps right away if I didn't want to

keep it.

Does this sound unrealistic ?

I dunno, seems to me I am lugging 250 LBs plus around and pushing an invisible shopping cart

around the wasteland and my companion has a 150 LB cart.

It would be nice to go to merchants and see what new items they have, instead of fast travelling

to them every hour to dump my load.

It really annoys me that most quest locations have so much

junk and armor and weapons that I think continually about my load and not the quest or sights.

I am supposed to be the lone wanderer and explorer but really I am the junk and trash collector.

I suppose it's this way to extend the game but it's not any more realistic than having it just

teleport to the workshop.

This isn't that hard to manage.

1) Pick yourself a home base.

2) At that base choose (or build) a nice, flat area for yourself.

3) Build or place your workbenches there.

4) Build yourself some footlockers. I use one for weapons, one for clothes/armor, one for aid and one for stuff I plan to sell or junk.

5) Set your fast travel landing spot to be right in front of the workbenches

As soon as you land at home you just clean out your companion, "store all junk" in the workbench (where it then enters the supply system) and then put the other stuff in the footlockers. Takes me less than 90 seconds.

At some point, you have to just stop.

The junk will always be there. Gather it up when you want to build something, leave it behind when you don't.

It can be tough to leave potentially valuable junk on the ground, but since the supply is never-ending and nothing is particularly rare, gathering up every last bit every time isn't neccessary.

Also, with the Scrapper perk, guns have tons of useful mats - eg Institute auto-pistols are loaded with 'electronics' mats, pipe rifles have copper, etc.

Last thing - tag mats you're short on so junk items containing them are highlighted. That way you can only take junk that you need and not get bogged down by tin cans and coffee mugs.

After a while, you can stop collecting certain items, like pipe pistols, basic leather armor, or anything that you've gotten a lot of. That way, you are less likely to go over the weight limit.

Teleporting junk to workshops remotely would seem too "advanced". This is the post-apocalyptic world after all, and things should be done in more primitive means.

I just re-read your OP and realized that my response didn't address your point, like, at all. Sorry.

It seems that what you're asking for is, effectively, an end to the limit on carry weight. As that would remove one of the few, small limitations on your character I don't think it's ever going to happen.

It's also worth mentioning that you're making a deliberate choice to play the way you are. I often decide ahead of time what kind of game session I plan on having: is this a questing day or an exploration day or a saluaging day or a building day? Set your priorities.

Or if you're playing on a PC stop gathering stuff at all. Just give it to yourself via the console and tell yourself "my settlers gathered all that up".

I use console command ''ModAV carryweight x'' where x is any number you like.

I want to enjoy the game, not play a game called 'Loot Management simulator'.

When I went home to drop my stuff I had to manually handpick EVERY item I wanted to drop from all that items I had. This boring sorting took me precious time and I was doing it several times as I scavenged a location. Wouldn't it be nice to have a 'base package' of stuff you always carry with you SEPARATED from the other useless junk, armor and weapons you pick up ? And when you get home you just press a single button to unload all items that are not needed, that are not in the 'base package' ? I hate to have all items mingled all the time and separate the items I use from the items I don't use, every single time.

My base package consisted in 3-4 guns, some mines, the armor I was wearing, some clothes for charisma boost, ammo, stimpacks, radaways, some jets, pshychos and a stealthboy. As I gathered other items along the way I looked through them to see if any of them is worth moving to the 'base package' and if not, I wanted to quickly leave them at home by pressing just one button, no more endless sorting.

I had a carryweight of 20.000, now I ''upgraded'' to 50.000. No more sorting every 10 mins, the game is more enjoyable :D Untill I find a mod that does what I want.

Get your settlements working for you.

Build water farms, sell off the purified water, and buy shipments of the materials you need from the merchants in Diamond City, Goodneighbor and Bunker Hill.

There is already a button for storing all junk in a workbench. So you basically want a similar button for storing all "unwanted" weapons, armor, aids, etc. I get your point (I think). But note that in a scavenge session, you always get a lot fewer weapons, armor, aids, etc. than junk items. So having to store weapons, armor, aids, etc. one by one is not too bad. Regarding the "basic package" thing you want, the game already marks your favorited weapons and equipped apparel, so that should make transferring items easier. Just transfer everything without the "heart" or the "dot" icon.

My biggest problem regarding my inventory is actually FINDING things in the workbench, which often has long lists of things to scroll through. I hope there will be a mod that filters items by search words.

Maybe this mod will help: http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/897/?

Better then nothing, but a 'search' function would do wonders. I have like thousands of items in my workbench.
