Power armour and fast travel

Post » Mon Jan 18, 2016 3:45 am

One really annoying thing in Fallout 4 is the loading times. They are really long and there are so many doors to go through to get to certain destinations.

Why is this necassary? Can't they load areas on the fly as you get nearer to them?

Other open world games don't have to do this.

Anyway, it is the way it is so, why don't they give us more fast travel options from inside building and things? Vault 81 isn't even a location to me because of the sheer faff on to get there. it takes far too long so i don't even bother anymore. It's a waste of the already scarce decent sized, 'proper' towns and locations. (why so few? The map is way overpopulated yet fewer locations that ever? It's like they expected us to create our own game with the settlement creation feature (which is great by the way) the problem with that is the settlements are hollow with no proper NPC's, story or proper quests. Why not add a few NPC's that would randomly spawn in differnt settlements with their own story and quests? Tha twouldn't be hard to do. It would make the settlements feel more real.

Anyway, yeah the loading times and fast travel, they should let us fast trave freoom inside buildings because of the terrible loading times, it's infuriating.

Another little niggle I have with the game is Power armour, they really beefed it up for this game and did a great job with it, I love it but.... you can't do anything inside of it, Why don't they let you craft while in power armour? It's a terrible feature, making you get in and out of your power armour all the time to do simple tasks like mod your guns or patch up your Power Armour.

also, if you have a companion and they are using one of your Power Armour suits and you need to patch both yours and your companions Power armour there is far too much getting in and out of your armour it is really tedious. You should be able to just fix it or go straight into the crafting animiation by pressing the action button. Also your companions can't get inside their power armour from the default position they armour is in on the rack. so you have to get back out of your armour, get into theirs, move it out then get out of your armu and get back into yours then ask them to get into theirs and half of the time they'll say they can't get to it, even though it's in a wide open area!

They could cut this process in half and possibly even let you patch companions armour while they are wearing it as well as your own. They should really update and patch this because it DOES spoil the fun od the game and I waste so much of my gaming time just doing this when i want to be exploring and having fun.

Sorry for being a miserable, whiny old fart today...

Actually you can transfer your companions power armour pieces to your inventory and craft them at the same time that you do your own then transfer the pieces back to your companion and equip them to their frame.

Really? Oh my God I never even thought about equipping it that way. I don't know why as I equip tons of stuff on settlers but, for some reason I never thought you could do it with Power Armour and you needed the frame.

So you can repair their power areomour on the armour work bench too?

THANK YOU SOOOOOO MUCH!

You don't realise how happy you've made me and how much time you've saved me! Thank you!

One thing to bear in mind.

Broken pieces have zero weight.

If you fix the pieces and give them back to your companion. they have weight again. so you might hit a snag of a fully loaded companion not being able to carry any more.

So sometimes it can better to give them the legs first and equip them straight away, then transfer the rest over to them.

I personally gave up on maintaining the companions suits as they trash them in no time.

I just put them in the frame if required.

But that's a personal choice.

Yeah, the companions really do trash their suits far too easily. Couldn't Bethesda fix this? Or maybe a modder? Please.

Yeah, I always add teh Calibrated legs just so I can carry more. that's the only reason I have companion, I actually prefer to be alone but, I want to carry as much loot as possible and junky for settlement building that I need a companion with me.. They are absolutely hopeless in their suits though!

Not being able to craft anything in Power Armor is not a problem to me. Being able to hack and pick locks is a bit of an immersion breaker. If I can hack and pick locks while I am in Power Armor, then I should be able to craft.

I have long loading times as well, but that's because I don't have a SSD in this machine yet. Heard that with SSD loading times are much quicker, like 5-10 seconds or so, compared to the 20-30 seconds I have with a 7200rpm HDD. Don't have any problems with loading in their other games tho, so maybe an optimization issue somewhere, I dunno. I am however, in the process of upgrading this PC, so will be getting a SSD in this month (Graphic card took priority hehe) Hopefully that will help. You don't write if you have a SSD, so perhaps that is something to plan for? Haven't tried installing the game on USB stick. Since it would prevent read/write to disc, it should improve load times, but I really don't know if that is feasible (or if it is even possible with FO4)

Loading times aren't much of a problem for me personally but the reason why Fallout 4 has them because Bethesda's games are made in a way where almost every single thing can be interacted with, be it enemy, item to pick up, container, etc...

A game loading a bunch of static items is easier on the system than a game loading a bunch of active-able items.

For PA and fast travel, there should definitely be a power core cost to go with it.

FT increments time, so should it need a fuel cost for FT in PA to remain logical.

They're already pushing it with free PA rides for companions.

If your budget allows it, I'd suggest investing in an SSD, They've come down in price a lot. I connected one externally to my XB1 and it cut my longest FT load times to 15-20 seconds. Still longer than I feel they should be, but better than like 45 seconds to a minute, which it was before. Time to enter named buildings is usually 5 seconds. Load times are my biggest gripe about the game, and it's a bit frustrating that I had to take extra measures to make the game run in a decent manner, but c'est la vie.

As I said in my post above yours, I don't struggle with their previous games, anywhere near as much as FO4. So FO3, FONV, Oblivion, Skyrim, all have fast load times compared to FO4 which really feels slow. With loading times of 20-30 seconds, stepping out of a building (loading time), fast travel to Goodneighboor (loading time), entering building to talk with Hancock, which takes 2 seconds to reach (loading time) Some places just becomes tedious. Like Railroad HQ where you have at least two loading times before getting out, and then perhaps a fast travel once out.
