Abernathy farm stuck at 6 settlers

Post » Mon Jan 18, 2016 3:31 am

Hi.

I just don't know what to do anymore. My Abernathy farm just won't grow past 6 settlers.

I've spent all my materials to do turrets there and stuff. At almost level 30 I still haven't built enough scavenging station to keep the materials flowing on their own, I was hoping this settlement will be my scavenging station as Sanctuary is my tato-corn-mutfruit adhesive farm station.

I have at Abernathy required food, water, beds and more than enough defense. Also the recruitment beacon is up and running, up on the building for good coverage. I've removed a big part of the walls surrounding the settlement to make sure new settlers arrive and assigned each existing settler to its own bed to avoid bedding problems. My charisma is at 3, so I should get 13 settlers. A very short video with the settlement, maybe you can spot something I missed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZPLopCnu45Y&feature=youtu.be

Sanctuary is a unique settlement where CHR isn't affecting the settlement limit, which will generally cap at 20 regardless of CHR.

For other settlements though, CHR is the limiting factor until you get to CHR 6.

I was running into the same issue as you were. I had CHR 4 as I freed Hangman's Alley of its previous residents, built it up, but couldn't get more than 4 settlers despite many in-game days passing. Unusual since the last time I did it, I got 10 right away with my first character.

Then I remembered I needed CHR 6 before creating supply lines, and as soon as I did that, I got 8 settlers within a few in-game hours.

Discovered by accident, but I'm quite sure CHR has to be 6+ before you can get 6+ settlers outside of Sanctuary.

Either that or it's one odd coincidence it worked out that way.

Its also an limit on unassigned settlers as I understand. Think its 5, and yes settlers might farm even if not assigned to farming, so just assign them as farmers.

Add that it can take days before more comes, its very random, suddenly an settlement get 5 more.

Now 3 are farmers and 3 are scavengers assigned at scavenging workbenches.

You can always send excess settlers from other settlements to Abernathy.

My suggestion based on my experience so it may not apply to your game.

Try setting up a settlement at Hangmans Alley .

in my game that settlement was a good source of frequent new settlers.

Once they are at hangmans move them to abernathy.

Probably not relevant but maybe tune in your radio to your beacon at Abernathy and check the coverage with the beacon on the ground compared to on the building

Some settlements just seem tobe very attractive to new settlers while other arent regardless what u build? Maybe surrounding location and enemies? The amount of staff you have built? It seema i get more settlers the more walls and defenses i build but that might be imagination.

Its the same in my game. I had 10 CHR from the outset, and rapidly recruited up most of the settlements to c.20 + provisioners. However Abernathy Farm has never recruited more than about 2 people in addition to the original family. The location is, of course, as lavishly equipped as the rest of the settlements - plus I am there every five minutes carrying out minutemen missions!

Whats really odd is that I cannot get the population past 8, even if I send settlers to Abernathy from other locations. I.s. they don't seem to arrive, or are invisible/ inert when they get there.

I think my problem at Abernathy may be related to another apparent bug discussed in a different thread - where a proportion of settlers just seem to be "missing" at each location. I.e. the stats show , say 18 settlers at a location, but when you do a head count there are only 14 or 15 present (even when you account for those assigned as provisioners).

I'm now level 58, but still can only find seven settlers at Abernathy....

Like me, maybe they just hate that old bat that keeps telling me to keep my hands off of her daughter after everything I've done for them, and they just turn around and leave. :nope:

Aside from assigning a provisioner and setting them up some defenses, I've never tried to turn Abernathy into a settlement. I've always considered it a family farm and left them to take care of themselves, outside of Minutemen defensive support. I always build my settlements in places that don't already have people living in them ... 'unclaimed land', if you will. Maybe that's why I've never run into any of the settlement bugs.

My experience has been that the more happiness-generating stuff you build, and the higher the level of the stuff you build -- in other words, stuff of high quality AND quantity -- the more likely settlers will come. Just because you have high values for defense, beds, food, etc. may not mean that much. You also need *high level* turrets, stores, water pumps as well. One tip I have is that not many settlements are located near a body of water for you to build water purifier, so build water purifier whenever and wherever you have the chance, since it is a higher level item than a water pump.

But nothing is guaranteed, of course. You can have a swanky town with few people coming (or coming slowly), and a bombed-out ghost town with plenty of newcomers the second you build that radio beacon. But from my experience, building things in general make it more likely to attract settlers.

besides being sure that your recruiting radio beacon is working, get your charisma up as high as possible, because as previously mentioned charisma +10 equals settlement size. You can enhance your charisma points if you wear a formal hat +1 charisma and a clean suit +2 charisma that will give you another plus 3 charisma points if you haven't put points into your character. you can also get Reginald's suit which is a +3 charisma suit when you rescue him and Strong.

Sharp armor also provides additional +1 charisma points so equip that when ever possible. also if you wear a dress, I know it sounds silly, but you get +2 to charisma and you can still wear arm armor while wearing a dress. so with a formal hat, sharp arm armor, a dress you can get +5 charisma points additional. eat some graqe mentats and that will add another 5 charisma points for a short time.

While you are out and about the commonwealth, look for the Picket and Fences magazines, they allow you to craft items to "decorate" your settlements, you would not believe what some potted plants and ferns do for settlement happiness. Little things like making beds easily accessible will add to their satisfaction and help to grow your settlement.

Summer shorts work better than dresses in that regard. Summer shorts allow you to wear both arm and leg armor, since they don't cover up your legs the way dresses do. So conceivably you can have up to +8 charisma:

summer shorts +2

sharp left arm armor +1

sharp right arm armor +1

sharp left leg armor +1

sharp right leg armor +1

formal hat (or similar) +1

black-rim glasses (or similar) +1

With graqe mentat +5, you have +13. While the graqe mentat is in effect (8 minuites real time), all your settlements can have max +23 settlers. During these 8 minutes you can move settlers from one settlement to another to take advantage of the increased max population cap. Once the graqe mentat wears out, you go back to +8 settlers only. But the settlements that have already got +23 settlers will stay that way.

Of course, sharp armor is a legendary item and may be hard to find, and you have to be lucky to get a complete set. I'm up to level 69 and have only got one sharp left arm, and sadly 2 sharp right legs.

you can always force the growth a bit by sending 1 or 2 people from your other settlements, and ALWAYS link settlements with supply line... it helps you built faster...

you have radio towers, you have beds... I don't get it... did you block off door way to your town?
