doesn't matter when you cripple him before going into a new area - gives you time to explore whilst he hobbles about healing himself - even better with bottle cap mines about him so as soon as he is healed he blows himself up - simples really

Just put a small fence in front of doors or a fence section - can be easily moved in build mode - mobs don't spawn inside the red rocket building. I also put some small fencing sections in the windows (under wood structres > misc 2nd selectable item after the wooden walk way item) - seems to mess up the mobs line of sight. Just be careful using the garage sliding door a raiders can spawn on or near the small hills/mounds in front of those doors.
I enjoy the settlement mechanic but there are too many issues with it at the moment - just seen Bethesda have released the latest beta patch for pc (I'm on xbox one- so go figure lol) but there are a number of 'fixes' on the cards in regards to workshops/settlements, so fingers crossed (especially in regards to settler 'happiness').
Just read the patch notes. YES. Several things here are nice changes/fixes.
The house door is close enough to the Red Rocket sliding door to use that if I needed to. I don't bother.. The garage door is closed and the other ones open.
NPC's can't navigate even the short fences.. I tested it on Codsworth thinking he would fly over.. nope..
I also have all zeros.. only some water.
