If you want a water factory, don't have any settlers there. In my experience your base can have a terrible defence rating yet never be attacked so long as no one lives there.

My current home base has no defence, no residents and has never been attacked.

Yeah but you can still get attacked by them later on, and i wud assume you can get attacked by anything else as well. So it will need defence same as any other settlment.

Even after it was cleared I've had a stray Mirelurk show up and get killed by the settlers that I sent there. I've had several Raider, and Super Mutant's attack though. They didn't all spawn in the same location, both spawned in the north end of the island (where the patio furniture is at), and the south end (where the camp fire is at) at roughly the same time.

It gets attacked just like any other settlement - random roll for whether it is by raiders, mutants, synths, etc.

There are also a few spawn points near the beach where mirelurks will respawn every now and then. Use the old military adage of holding the high ground and build some small towers on each strategic high ground spot with missile turrets. They have massive range and the open terrain on spectacle isle is one giant killing field.

Note - spectacle isle is so big it is actually two separate 'islands'. If you build resource items on one end (the end where small default greenhouse and power armor station is at) and at the opposite side (where boat with generator is at) - the stats will become confused because the is so big.

E.g. If you build 50 power at one end, 50 power other end, you think you have 100 power. But no - the zone is so large you will see that as you travel from one end to other, looking at build mode - the power stats will show less than the 100 total you built because other end is so far away, it seems to count it as another settlement.

So if you want to place turrets all around the island, you need to build nodal power stations, not just one giant central power node to hook your grid up to like most settlements. Or just build on one end vs another.

I made a water farm in sanctuary and because I haven't done any minutemen quests yet attacks haven't been enabled. I am lvl 48 and have over 20k water in a container. I am certain that attacks and their frequency are determined by how far into the Minutemen quests you are.

This is true to a point as it will never be attacked when you're not around but it can be attacked while you're there working on it (happened to me a couple times).

Yep, I think so too, I'm level 33 and have 5 pretty good set up settlements with no attacks or random kidnappings or anything. "The first step" is active in my quest log, but I haven't completed it yet. Been like that about 20 levels or so.

I think around 8 atm? I could build more but I dont see the need as every time I return back to Sanctuary I have roughly 480 waters in my workshop.
