Why does Preston keep taking his clothes off?

Post » Mon Jan 18, 2016 6:10 pm

This query is obviously NOT addressed to those that dump Garvey at the earliest opportunity.

So, because I decided to initially concentrate on rebuilding the Commonwealth early on, I kept Preston as my primary Companion. When I got my second set of PA, I put him in it. Big Mistake. Preston is horrible about trying to NOT get hit while wearing it. He was costing a fortune in repair resources. So I took away the PA and made him rely on some very decent fully-upgraded Combat Armor that has the benefit of never degrading, no matter how much abuse the wearer puts it through. HOWEVER, since then, about every other day, I find Preston running around a settlement in nothing but his skivvies and Minuteman hat, chatting up the settlers with his Minuteman spiel.

Anybody else experiencing this?

At least the Preston in your game is more interesting than the rest of ours :P

That's weird though. I'm assuming you gave him a base layer of clothes to put under the aromor and actually 'equipped' everything in the trade screen, right?

He's probably very excited to see you. He wants to give you another radiant quest.

Preston in the early stages used to just wander off for long periods of time and then show back up whenever he felt like it. One time he returned wearing a full set of PA minus the helmet. I sent him to the Castle and after thebattle he returned to Sanctuary, took the PA off and sat around in his underwear. Total idiot.

I guess that was a tough battle at Quicny... Maybe it's post traumatic dress disorder...

It's because he loves you. That's why he keeps giving you all those quests.

I've never had this problem, but then I've never changed his clothing or given him armor or anything. He must make do with his original Minuteman outfit and hat. :)

That's...Something else. Ive never had a bug like that in this game or all the others.

I can't even begin to think what would be causing that. You get the join the club of really strange bugs that have no explanation I guess. I had the sky in Oblivion turn a solid black once, during the daytime, no stars or moons or anything.

Not sure how this could've happened. My guess is something to do the combat armour; he mightn't have had anything to wear under it. Usually companions carry and underoutfit for this exact reason (yknow, Road Leathers and such) but you've gone 'Take All' to pull it out it could A, remove the Minuteman underoutfit, B, remove the Colonial Duster (you can loot their default outfits if they're wearing something else), and/or C, looted all the combat armour (pieces like that are unequipped while in power armour).

I haven't seen this with Preston, but one of the Caravan guards is running around in his underwear for some reason.

But equipped him with his regular duster again afterward.

Dressed him myself. Start with Army fatigues (+1 STR, +1 AGI), then five pieces of modded Combat Armor + Combat Helmet. That's what he was wearing when I told him to get out of the PA. That's is what he wore when we went adventuring. But once we got back to Sanctuary Hills... All the stuff got unequipped and the Minuteman hat was brought out of retirement. I have to Command him and dress him all over again. And again. And....

Given the timing, I got the impression he was being petulant because I obviously thought he couldn't be trusted with the keys to the PA. (Which he, well, can't. Every time he takes it out for a spin, when it comes back it has to go into the shop for yet more body repairs.)
