Read the manual first. You'll find it both enlightening and entertaining.

Did you try pressing F1? The help screen can be a useful start. Also you can download the manual http://www.nma-fallout.com/forum/dload.php?action=category&cat_id=10.

Does anyone know where to obtain the old Fallout 1 and 2 spiral manuals? Is that the only manual that the game ever came with? I lost mine ages ago and really want another copy for both games.

Nowadays Fallout comes without any printed manual. It only has the pdf-file. You would have to find some of the early releases and since they are not made anymore you'd probably have to try your luck with different second hand markets and such.

It IS nothing like FO3.

Save lots. Don't try to fight everything you see/encounter, you will die. Remember that your character generation actually matters in this game. Sometimes you have to think. What you do in the game actually effects what happens later and what options you can take, meaning you can't just rest for a day and then everyone forgets that you murdered their friend.

It may just be me, but unless you've played some old RPG games before I think it's best to start out with FO2, because game play wise it is much improved over FO1, even if the story/world isn't as good. If you don't mind a sharp learning curve (compared to FO3) then definitely play them in order.
