Fallout: Oblivion vs Bethesda

Post » Tue Jan 19, 2016 2:21 am

Could someone more informed than me explain to me why Obsidian got to make New Vegas and Bethesda made 3 and 4? Who then will make the next title for Fallout? Is there any chance that obsidian will be next?

I wish that Bethesda would sell the rights to them as they obviously respect the Fallout brand and make the better game. Bethesda clearly thinks they know what's best for us and will force something in their own image - well they should just go make another title rather than ruin Fallout by turning it into a cheap FPS only game.

I think you're mistaking The Elderscrolls IV: Oblivion, with the company Obsidian, who made Fallout New Vegas. Anything is possible when it comes to future Fallout titles.

Bethesda made Fallout 3 and Fallout 4 because they own the franchise now. Bethesda went to Obsidian and wanted them to develop a spin-off Fallout game that used much of the same resources and engine of Fallout 3, which seemed appropriate enough because Obsidian is made up of some of the lead folks that were at Black Isles Studios who developed Fallout 2.

No one knows if Bethesda would want another spin-off developed by Obsidian or if it was just a one time thing, or if Obsidian would be interested in doing it either. As far as we're concerned, Fallout's future is with Bethesda, simply because they own the franchise.

Personally, I too would love to see Obsidian develop another Fallout game. Fallout 2 and New Vegas are among my favorite games in the series.

I've frankly gone from extreme disappointment with FONV to extreme loathing for the game with this sort of stuff. I would be extremely happy if Obsidian never ever touched a franchise I enjoy ever again.

Bethesda got the rights to Fallout because they had the money and wanted to make Fallout games. So there is absolutely no way for Obsidian to get the rights to Fallout unless Fallout 4 was a complete disaster or Bethesda has wrote all the stories they want for it. Fallout 4 earning $750 million in its first 24 hours certainly disproves that it was a complete disaster.

Bethesda gave Obsidian permission to create New Vegas. It probably had to do with Bethesda busy creating Skyrim that they let Obsidian create New Vegas. After all, major development of Fallout 4 didn't start until Skyrim was done. Obsidian rarely does its own original IP. Only Alpha Protocol and Pillars of Eternity are new IPs.

Maybe you're just not part of a demographic Bethesda caters to. It's ok. They don't owe anyone a thing. If you don't like the Bethesda iterations of FO, then stick with the originals. It's all you'd have if Bethesda hadn't bought the IP, anyway.

That said, I do hope Obsidian gets another crack at it.

For some strange reason, I can enjoy all of the Fallouts.

Well no one needs to buy the rights from Beth to make a post apocalypses game. My suggestion to you is design a base game, start a kick starter campaign to raise the money, develop the game and then bring it to market (there are more steps but was being brief). It worked for Wasteland 2. Until then you just have to play what others are willing to make for you.

I liked the SPECIAL based speech checks a lot more than the new random chance Charisma ones, especially ones that affected who lived and died. Just felt like it mattered more when you could talk down killer robots in old world blues from trying to kill you than convincing someone to tell you where to go in this game

Odd since Obsidian (Black Isle) created Fallout 2 and now there are some people who helped create Fallout working at Obsidian. So in a way without Obsidian the franchise you love might not even exist.

I don't know why anyone could hate New Vegas, I loved it, also love Bethesda's Fallouts 3+4.

You mean the dialogue locks? That is what I thought of those "checks".

Just saying. I did not like NV better than 3, in fact, I feel that NV was simply a reskinned fallout 3 with some very minor changes that did not make the game any better than if they were chokeheld by bethesda to use whatever that company gave them without allowing for changes.

Sorry, no versus threads allowed - especially considering nearly every topic on this forum inevitably turns into the exact same "Obsidian vs Bethesda" anyway...
