Daggerfall---Using A Controller?

Post » Tue Jan 19, 2016 7:26 pm

I searched this here but didn't really see what I wanted, I recently for Christmas got a 360 controller that hooks up to my laptop. I wanted to use it mainly for Daggerfall so I downloaded Xpadder and set it up, it runs well for VBA but on Dosbox Portable? I can manage to get the controller to work slightly but it glitches, doing a command meant for another button and I can't even ATTACK anymore, even when using the keyboard attacking no longer works!!! Did I just forget how it works? Idk but whether not bring up that screen (forgot the key command but you can bring up your keyboard setup for Dosbox) and set a controller button to a keyboard one, even if I wrote down the buttons Dosbox uses there isn't enough buttons on the controller to set each of the commands too.

But I am sure there is a way to use a controller to Dosbox and Daggerfall, but what is it? This is the controller, https://www.google.com/webhp?ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8#q=xbox+360+red+controllerif anyone can help me set up a controller to play Daggerfall with than super thanks, playing this game with the keyboard and mouse is----not really good, movement is awkward when I have to walk---pause---turn---walk----pause---turn---look up which button opens a door----walk---repeat.

Honestly it's slow, has to be a good setup for a controller....

Can't help you with the controller, but Daggerfall has a Mouse Look mode that works very much like the later games. It sounds (from the "walk---pause---turn---walk---" stuff), like you're using the older style movement control.

I concur with glargg. I weep when I see the old control system. HOW ON NIRN did people resist the urge to throw their PC's out the window?

I'm curious as to how the combat would work with a controller considering how you have to "slash" at things or "jab" at them by moving the mouse different ways.

If you find a really good controller setup for it though, I'd be interested myself. I generally prefer using controller over mouse and keyboard for most things since it's more comfortable for my hands.

It can be done. I created an Xpadder profile a long time ago for Daggerfall that worked pretty well, but I haven't used it in years. If I recall correctly, the trick to making it work is you have to use its "sets" feature and have a different "set" with as different mouse speed for combat and normal movement. The mouse speed in Xpadder needs to be really fast for combat and normal speed for movement and menu navigation. Make the combat set active when you hold one trigger down, then you can use one of the sticks to swing the weapon (which ever is mapped to mouse movement). That

's my recollection of how I made it work.

Also, I did not try to map any DosBox controls. I mapped the controller controls directly to the keyboard controls for Daggerfall. I never touched any of the DOSBox settings.

I am not sure what version of Daggerfall/DOSBox you are using, but I would recommend http://wiwiki.wiwiland.net/index.php/Daggerfall_:_DaggerfallSetup_ENversion by Ancestral Ghost which comes with a fully configured DOS Box and a bunch of bugfixes.

Again, it's been years, but if I recall correctly, you just slash with your anolog stick by moving it back and forth in different directions. When you map mouse movements to an anolog stick, you can get the same types of movements as using a mouse, its just less precise (for most users, with practice, you can get pretty accurate using a mouse with a controller and I often use a controller at work when surfing the web or reviewing documents, so I can kick back in my chair and take some pressure off my back).

Wow a quite a few replies here....huh that's interesting, so assume I have to start the entire game over? Wouldn't be a issue as probably have just 3 or so days on the game. So let me ask, by downloading that will I need to uninstall my current Dosbox and Daggerfall or will it work without having to uninstall? As for my version of Dosbox, it says "DOSBox v0.74" in the Manual, as for Daggerfall Idk. I assume it's the normal version? Unsure if it had any DLC besides Daggerfall 2 (you know like Shivering Isles, don't think that is in this version).

Daggerfall did not have any DLC, but there was a Comp USA version with a questpack that comes bundled in the version I linked. Here is a http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Daggerfall:Files to the UESP page discussing the various versions of Daggerfall with a little more detail.

I don't really know the answers to your questions. I am by no means an expert on how to set up old DOS games, which is why I used the version I linked since it was created to be an idiot proof one click install for people. I would assume you could either uninstall your old version and then run this or install the new one over the top of the old. But I don't really know. All I know is when I installed Daggerfall with this version, All I had to do was run the setup.exe and it put a daggerfall icon on my desktop. Game runs flawlessly. I never even had to open DOSBox. All I do is click the daggerfall icon when I want to play.

If your game is not working right even with a keyboard and mouse, then it sounds like you have messed up some of the game settings somewhere because Xpadder is not going to prevent the game from working with keyboard and mouse. Maybe uninstallation and reinstallation would be your best bet. But I cannot say for sure. All I really know how to do with Daggerfall is set up the Xpadder profile. :)

DOSBox 0.74 is the latest, I believe. And I think it's the version used by the Anthology installer, as well as the UESP-linked version.

As for the controls, you can change between the two control systems from within Daggerfall. In fact, if you do the startup tutorial, I believe it tells you how to do this.

I forgot Daggerfall even had a joystick option. If you are using Xpadder, you want to make sure your Daggerfall control system is set for keyboard and mouse. That could certainly cause issues if the control system was set for joystick.

I tested the joystick option-----I had trouble closing it...think God the mouse can still be used with a controller hooked in, the way I have Xpadder setup is I simply pressed the buttons to assign them. I just want to know one question, will I have to start all over? I don't mind Dosbox, I can just click (or rather press two buttons) to enter and exit it, if I wanna pause and reply to a friend in Gmail or Skype it's super easy. I like the screen to be big, but not so big it takes up 100% of the monitor---tbh Dosbox can't even do that as the icons at the bottom are halfway off the monitor...anyways if I do have to start over it won't be a issue, been a few months since I stopped playing as didn't like using the keyboard and mouse.

GBA games it's fine but a game where you can move the camera and move almost 3D like? Yeah not the best option.....I just want my controler to work without me messing up the keyboard input, luckily Dosbox's keyboard input doesn't effect the inbox outside it, like it comes with a built-in keyboard option where you tell what triggers each key. Again tho, now I can't even attack...

Yeah, don't use the joystick option it should be set to keyboard and mouse.

As I mentioned, I cannot really advise you on anything other than Xpadder questions. Nothing you do in Xpadder would require you to start over.

But I cannot advise on whether you have DOSBox set up right or anything related to installing or configuring either Daggerfall or DOSBox. All I can say about that is when I set it up, I did not touch any of the settings in either DOSBox or Daggerfall other than to make sure the Daggerfall control system was set to Keyboard and Mouse.

I'll just download that link you gave and see if it'll work with a controller, I like Dosbox but really whether use a controller.

EDIT:Just saying I did find http://www.gog.com/forum/general/about_dosbox_and_xbox_360xinput_controllersbefore but wasn't sure if I should mess with that stuff..

I checked out yoru link. It does not look like the DOSBox's built in key mapping is sophisticated enough for a game like Daggerfall. You need to use Xpadder's "sets" feature to get combat working properly in Daggerfall. The reason is you need to swipe the mouse very quickly in order to get Daggerfall to recognize the attack because of Daggerfall's mouse swing combat. In order to get Daggerfall to recognize a swing of the mouse using an anolog stick, you need to increase the mouse speed in Xpadder to the maximum, but that will be too fast for mouse control in menus or anything else you need the mouse for. So you need a separate "set" you can access when you hold down a button.

So, the way I have it set up, when I hold down the left trigger, my controller switches to the second "set" where my mouse speed is increased to the max emulation speed (255 vertical and 255 horizontal, which is all the way to the right), and I flip the right anolog stick to "swing the mouse" and attack. Then I release the left trigger and the controller reverts back to the first "set" where my mouse speed is a more normal emulation speed (51 vertical and 51 horizontal, which is a ways left of center).

You can access "sets" by opening you Xpadder profile, then clicking on any of the controller buttons to bring up the Xpadder keyboard, then clicking the advanced button on the bottom right. That opens a new window and you can choose between a number of options, including "set selector." From there you can enable and configure a second "set" of mapping configurations. Xpadder allows you to have up to 8 different "sets" of keyboard/mouse configurations on the same profile.

I use one of the joysticks on my controller for this. Movement is very fluid and spontaneous.
