Some help with distant land

Post » Tue Jan 19, 2016 9:10 am

After having just upgraded to the most recent version of Tamriel Rebuilt, I took a quick ship from Seyda Neen over to the nearest town on the mainland (part of TR's "preview" section I believe). I noticed that the view distance there seemed rather short - vanilla distance, perhaps?

I'm using MGE XE, primarily to give me a couple of cells worth of view distance more than vanilla did, and I suspect I have to 'regenerate distant land' or something of that nature. Can anyone give me a hint as to how to do that?

You're right, you need to regenerate distant land. Just make sure you also select TR .ESM files during the process this time.

Morrowind only loads the cell that the player character is in and 8 adjacent cells, so a "grid" of 9 cells in total. The game does not render anything past that. So with MGE, when you create distant land, it scans the selected .esm/.esp files and creates models and textures of the whole in-game world - shape of the terrain, objects, trees etc. Then it renders it on top of vanilla Morrowind using some magic known only to programmers. This means that you need to regenerate distant land every time you add, remove or change mods that add/modify/remove exterior cells (possibly interior cells too, if you select that checkbox in MGE XE).

Thanks!

So, would I have to run MGE somehow (probably in my morrowind folder somewhere...?), and then follow a series of pop ups in order to regenerate that distant land?

Apologies for what is likely a very basic question. When I installed MGE several years ago I basically didn't tweak it at all, and haven't touched it since.

There should be a file called "MGEXEgui.exe" in you main Morrowind folder. Switch to Distant Land tab, click on large "Distant land generation wizard" and just follow the instructions. Remember to select TR files and any other new .esp you've gathered over the time. Safest way would be to just select same files as you use for playing. If you're using Overhaul, the grass plugins will reside in Data Files\Grass and you will need to select them manually.

If you installed MGE several years ago, it might be worth to check for new versions. It's been updated every now and then, and chances are you might be missing some neat functions, like interface scaling.
