How many cells do you run in MGE?

Post » Tue Jan 19, 2016 7:28 am

Just curious. I run about 8 cells. I'd run more if my laptop could handle it.

I'm running 7 cells in MGE XE and I think that's almost too much, not only for performance reasons, but because I quite like how the fog looks. It fits well into the game.

I'm running MGE XE with 40 cells. I really like the views.

System Specs:

Shuttle SZ77R5 with Intel i5-3570K CPU @ 3.4GHz, 8GB Ram

Window 7

Nvidia GeForce GTX 670 (driver 9.18.13.1422)

I know its an old driver, but I've come across 2 updates that totally screwed up MW.

Whatever the default is :P (Need to figure out how to check...)

I know that I can see farther than vanilla, but it's not over-the-top. I can see pretty much from one end of Vivec to the other, or from Pelagiad to the Dwemer ruins near Balmora.

I don't think I'd want to see much farther than that. It allows me to see a 'reasonable' distance, but I can still get lost.

9 cells, less ruins the illusion while flying. IMO ideally camera height should be a factor for exterior cell view distance

10. But with MR and full AA it's quite laggy.

Around 3-5. I like the closeness.

Same as above. I know Morrowind's fog was due to PC limitations circa 2002, but one can't help but to assume the game world was designed with a short view distance in mind given that fact.

5,5 Because I don't like to clearly see Vivec or Ebonheart from Seyda Neen.

Usually on 20- but I've bumped things up to 255 for screenshots. I think 40 or even 60 is fairly reasonable. Higher than that and you don't really get the effect of the atmospherics. 20 is a nice compromise between visuals and frame rate. At that distance you can see red mountain from any point on Vvardefel. On my tests for 255 I could see from Dunmeth Pass all the way to the Dwemer Ruin North of Necrom.

3 cells. It would be nice not to see Ebonheart from Vivec cantons, but even 1 cell distant land get this.

I run 36, but only because more then that starts hitting the frame rate. I don't really need any more then that I can see the Telvannis portion of TR's main land from Solsthiem.

I can't remember if it is 2 or 3 but I have it set pretty low. I use MGE XE for the UI scaling and to be able to play on a HDTV in 1080p, not for the distant land. I like the fog.

Eleven has been the sweet spot for my game. Lately I've been thinking of lowering the number to pull in the fog a bit closer. Would I see much change by dropping to 9 or 8?

I use 30 with fog start/end = 2/24, so from vivec's palace there's a hazy view of the dwemer ruins atop (mountainous) red mountain.

I use 5 to keep the island from feeling as small as it really is, but with a far enough view to be useful. I'm considering adding a cell or two and bringing the fog closer, though.

3. I can see Fort Moonmoth from Balmora, but not quite Arkngthand. It's a decent view distance boost but still leaves some mystery.

The good performance is nice too.
