Question on freezing

Post » Wed Jan 20, 2016 4:21 am

So I have been playing skyrim recently and all of a sudden when ever I try to load the saved game I want to play it freezes while it's loading the save. I have looked online and tried the following. Trying to load the saved game while going into the pause menu from a different save (starting over and then going into the pause menu). Deleting the save files from my consol except the one I want to load. Clearing game cache by holding LB RB and X. Going to continue instead of load game. And lastly plugging my x box to x box live to update it in case it would help delete the bug. I didn't download any mods or anything to make it freeze that way either. It seems that if I start a new game it works just fine but I was hoping that you can tell me if there is a way to fix this without starting over. Thank you for all the advice

Were you using a modded save file you downloaded? With Xbox, I used to have problems with this, especially with the Dovahgolt modded save.

on a PC freezing at load screens or loading a saved game is due to memory allocation.................The S.T.E.P Project on nexus has a lot of information on how Skyrim allocates its memory & of the 2GB limit ...............you can install mods that fix the problems of memory allocation.........as for other platforms has no idea.so sorry this one cant help

if you are on a PC use a mod called Safety Load or its updated version (cant remember its name) .......this mod corrects how Skyrim memory is allocated......and switch to window mode for more stable game play

I have to ask, what mods can you download if you are on the Xbox?

As for your current situation, I'd dare guess you have a corrupted savefile. In that case, reverting to a previous save is about all one can do.

Then there is the possibility of suffering from savefile bloat and the save has simply become so large that the console hardware cannot support it.

My recall is slowly coming around. I remember having a small list of things to do as preventative measures for lag, freezing and crashes on the console.

  • Clear cache

  • Ensure the Xbox is upright and well ventilated, with no obstructions.

  • Have a small fan or even the AC blowing on the console.

  • Disable autosave.

  • Always make a new save and never save over another file.

  • Limit total saves to 5 at any given time.

  • Store excess saves and characters in the cloud or a thumbdrive.

  • Do not drop anything in the game world.

  • Sell or give away all unused gear and junk.

  • Pick up dropped enemy weapons and place them on the dead.

I know there are more... Granted, this will not help your current issue. Alas, these practices will help ensure a reduction in future playthroughs.

I was wondering this too. I figured maybe he used the word 'mod' in place of 'dlc'? That, or he used a modded save, or is using a modded jtagged xbox.

I don't use mods, so I don't think mods have caused it. I'm not a tech savvy guy so I just like to stick to regular gamplay- mrkompleto

DLCs are essentially official mods so that is a possibility.

Saves that have been manipulated by the use of console commands is a scary way to go. Pending what the PC user did.

When I played on xbox, I tried using a few of the modded saves out there. There were ALWAYS glitches a plenty. Strangely one of the reasons I switched to pc was just to do my own mods. lol

Perhaps you've got a corrupted file? I've had some files that gave me fits like this, but I just loaded an older save and begrudgingly redid my progress. (sorry I'm not much help)

I'm putting my money on you having a large savefile. Make sure you have seen my revised post from earlier as it can get lost in scrolling. Your future games should perform better.

What level are you, and how big is your save file?

Reload a previous working save, and play with this one from now on...

My game keeps freezing too. Not when I'm loading a save but after playing a while it will freeze during a loading screen or randomly while walking around. I only have one save and haven't done that much. I'm level 22, and haven't even started the main quest line yet.

Don't overwrite your save over and over again, as it could ruin your save file in the long run.

Also, why do you have only one save? Is there any particular reason why you do that?

I added these, as my recall comes in, to the suggested list posted earlier.

  • Limit total saves to 5 at any given time.

  • Store excess saves and characters in the cloud or a thumbdrive.

I only keep one save because I read that keeping several saves would cause it to freeze. I figured if I only kept one, then that couldn't be the issue. I don't over write the save, I delete it, then make a new save. I read that installing skyrim onto the hard drive helps, but I don't have the free space and also read from others it didn't help at all. It seems like all of the bethesda titles I've played have had this same issue. FO3 and FONV were bad for this too. They would freeze on loading screens a lot. Is this just a bethesda issue that can't be fixed?

I thought you created only one save, and saved then over that. lol

Yes, i thing keeping less saves in your HDD should help a bit.

As for the loading screens freezing problem, that could be game related, HDD related perhaps if your HDD is old and full of contents.

That what i know for sure - is, if you get a never ending loading screen, most probably your save is corrupt!

I don't know which model that you have but I just went through 2 older models because the heat warps the motherboard.

Ive learned a few things like I started having this problem during the first stages of warping, I don't know anything about hardware but for me the glitch was caused by saving when the GPU wasnt fully attached to the board during the warping process.

Also running the disc drive instead of having it downloaded to the HDD makes it way hotter, I guess that the latest model doesnt overheat but I can smell something burning in mine, anyways with my last old model I managed to open it up and fix it by first having skyrim downloaded then leaving the top off while putting 2 heatsinks and 20 pre 82 pennies on top of the GPU heatsink (left one) also I have 2 plastic bottles with frozen water in a cardboard box that the 360 sits on.

Needless to say that this isnt the safest but considering that its 2ft in front of me its not to bad also have the power brick off the floor and cooled also, lastly plug it into a quality "power bar" because not regulating the heat could be contributing to overheating.

I put a set 2 heatsinks on top of the attached one but I think that the added weight is helping to keep the GPU solidly attached to the board.

I have a new one that I use to play disc games so this one is use exclus evely for Skyrim, with this set up ive played 12hr sessions non stop befor it starts getting glitchy and when it does its way way hot almost to hot to touch.

I know nothing about electronics and learned from Youtube and I trial and error if you open it up be very cafe ful, after doing this twice I can attest that it isnt very difficult, I barely know how to post this reply LOL.

Good Luck and happy trails

Sorry, you probably don't have a spare heat sinks but a fan blowing on it while the top is off would help a lot also you can probably find a copper object at a Home Depot that you can use, just describe the dimensions and what you are using it for, they should be able to hook you up (gotta love that place).

I was thinking of just tightening the heat sink down thus keeping the GPU solidly attached to the board but more heat sink materiel is necessary to absorb and disipate the heat or something might melt and start a fire theoretically you could make a brick of pre 1982 pennies with electrical tape.

It would probably take like 200 or so LOL but in theory it works the goal is to put as much weight or slightly more than the existing heat sink that is made of heat absorbing copper, the pennies would have to be pre 1982 because after that they are made mostly of something else I think Zinc.

I would at least thouqhraly clean all the dust out because if its a older model freezing and glitching are the first signs of the GPU being damaged and once thats fried due to heat its only good for parts.

You can get a longer cable to more the disc drive outside of the case which would help air circulation, if you do open it up you'll see what im talking about, its plugged into the mother board not "hard wired".

I have the xbox 360 slim. I've had it completely taken down and put back together and there's nothing wrong with the hardware. Bethesda games are the only ones that freeze this way. If it was freezing on all my other games, I would think the xbox itself would be the issue, but it has no issues with other games at all. Skyrim, FO3 and FONV had the same issues on my old xbox, and no other games did. So I think it's a Bethesda thing. I read the same engine was used for all three of those games. That could be the problem.

Maybe I missed the statement somewhere but I will say it anyway.

Try cleaning, (or even better), repairing your disk. I have x-box 360 with 250g hard drive and a fan mounted on top to help keep my 360 cool. When I started having the freeze problem I did all the same as you. It still froze on me. Then I cleaned the disk and repaired the scratches. Now when the light reads off the disk, its not being refracted away from the info it's trying to read. My freezing stopped.... But I still save often and delete old saves. (force of habit)......
