Recon scope tracking aka "3D tagging" from battlefield 3. Been using it for the last few days to stalk BOS knights in power armor. Mark them, then maneuver around them to shoot the core and blast them out of their suit so I could steal it.

I'm the opposite. Recon scopes are useless to me, since I just want to see people from a distance and not add icons to the screen. Power armour helmet modded for targetting already lets me see people, so getting a close-up of their face is all that matters. It might not show where they are behind cover, but I enjoy a little cat-and-mouse.
I guess it allows you to set up a plan of attack as you can monitor their movement patterns. I usually just blast them all on sight, but I rec(k)on I'll give this a try.
Recon scope sounds cool, but it also seems pointless. Personally, if I have someone in my sights, I usually plan to kill them.
Might I suggest a mod on the Nexus that reskins the Recon Scopes so their colors are not in such harsh contrast the weapons they are mounted on: http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/554/?
I'd prefer one that makes them regular colors when looking through the scope rather than that washed out black/white.
From what I tried I only got the compass marks and those indeed are rather useless, in that regards the recon scope is useless to me. Didn't even know it's supposed to give floating markers before reading this thread but then again, they're off for a reason. Why do they combine en enhancement you get from an item to a spoiler feature of the UI is beyond me
They are also quite useful once you get the perk that allows you to shoot through cover. Since the dot is always right above their heads, all you have to do is aim a bit below it.
