I like Fallout 4

Post » Fri Jan 22, 2016 4:43 am

Indeed, I've spent a shocking amount of time on it which is a surprise because, historically, I don't like Bethesda games.

I didn't like Morrowind. I didn't bother playing Oblivion. I didn't like Fallout 3 (despite or perhaps because of being a hardcoe old school Fallout fan) and I couldn't really get into Skyrim.

But I think they actually got it right (if not perfect) this time, and I'd like to offer my congratulations, and also some thoughts.

Stuff I liked:
-Settlements
-Power Armor
-Main story
-Piecewise armor

Stuff I disliked:
"Fake difficulty" in settlement management (it's hard to tell what your settlers are doing, or find them to give them tasks, and they'll starve rather than tend the plants without specific instructions.)

Stuff I'd like to see more of:
-Magnolia
-Music (Finding a cache of prewar music would make for a cool quest)
-Guns (more types, more mods.) Particularly, but not only, the iconic Fallout guns that are missing, such as the 10mm SMG.
-Actually different monsters (as opposed to different flavors of the same monsters.)
-Sorting options for Pip-boy inventory screen (val/wt would be seriously handy.)
-Uses for the 20+ Power Armor frames I've collected in my garage at Sanctuary Hills.
-USS Constitution/Captain Ironsides

And stuff I'd like to see that isn't there:
-Crafting guns/armor and ammo (rather than just modding guns and scavving/buying ammo)
-A way to chamber a gun in a different caliber *and* change it between semi and auto.
-Multi-type ammo system (like NV)
-Felicia Day
-Chrysalis Motors Highwayman
-Centaurs? I mean, they're disgusting and I hate them, but what's Fallout without Centaurs?
-Multiplayer?
-The ability to claim a bed at one of my settlements, and to permanently assign a bed to each of my companions who need one.
-Offhand melee weapons/shields.
-Better keybinding for PC.
-Better handling of existing structure and terrain for Settlements. If there's a wall or floor I can't scrap, I want to be able to repair it or otherwise work with it. If there's a doorway, I want to be able to put a door in it.

Revisiting the Capitol Wasteland could also be fun. Could be interesting to see what's changed in the last decade or so.

Sorting by value and weight is already in the Pip-Boy menu.

No multiplayer... ever. That's pretty much universally agreed upon for both Fallout and Bethesda fans. For what it's worth, Todd has mentioned that they always seem to have that element in their initial planning but that it also always winds up getting dropped because it screws up far more important elements.

No multi-ammo types like FONV. That simply adds clutter for no reason except to add clutter, and there's already more than enough clutter to manage.

Settlers will default to tending untended crops if nothing else is manually assigned to them. I've had this happen many times and I think it is also mentioned in the Help info.

There are actually quite a large variety of creatures in Fallout 4, more so than earlier games and probably because of the increased memory and other technical advancements. It is likely that a few more will be added in any DLC, of course, as that is quite normal.

I don't think the settlement management was intended to be "difficult" let alone "fake difficult". It is just far more popular and successful than they probably planned on it being, that's all, so they need to focus some resources to expand/refine it some more. Todd was HOPING it would be very popular but he didn't gamble on it, I don't think, and it's a brand new element for them to try. We'll have to see what they do moving forward.

We definitely need to be able to craft clothing, though, or other base elements for aesthetically equipping our character, as well as outfitting settlers.

Many people never use Power Armor and couldn't care less about it, so they have to keep that in mind when designing the game elements.

I don't like Fallout 4... I'm freakin' obsessed with it! LOL All I do is think, dream, read about it, when I'm not playing it! *sigh*

Lol, Felicia Day.... wtf?!

You can chamber different ammo types already, and switch semi- to auto.

Everything else on the "want" list I can't say I also would want- most of it is either fiddly micromanage-y stuff, stuff from NV or just stuff I don't think fits Fallout.

I would like to see LESS Magnolia. Lynda Carter's voice acting is fine (her singing a little groan-inducing) but the animations on the character model make her into a hell-puppet.

There were some circumstances where the differing FONV ammo types were useful... being able to switch from standard 12 gauge to slug or pulse slug was situationally useful although I do agree that the bulk ammo was not.

Still, mods will address these issues by assigning new ammo recipes and weights.

Maybe Veronica should come back....?

Felicia Day was the "it" girl in gaming for a minute there, though. In '09.

Get rid of your call for multiplayer (it's an RPG not a co-op shooter) and your call for going back to DC (I've already played that game) and I am on board with your suggestions.

I love Fallout 4, too. It's maybe not as fleshed out as Fallout 1 and 2 were. Then again, what game nowadays got the story complexity of the games of old times.

What I really love:

Companions: Piper, Nick, Hancock, Dogmeat and Deacon. Those were my favorite characters. They felt like the most authentic characters in this game and I love their already existing banter, snarky comments.

My personal favorite is Hancock and I drag him with me wherever I go. That character made me laugh so hard at times.

I really hope you have more for the existing companions in store rather than just adding more guys/women travel around with. Most of us got usually their favorite character they drag around most of the time, anyway.

I for example have either Dogmeat or Hancock with me. I only switch to other companions, if the quest requires it.

Is it just me? Paladin Danse reminds me a great deal of Anomen from Baldurs Gate 2.

What I hope to see in this game (DLCs):

  • Better official interior housing - larger rooms/housing.

  • Also being able to build crafting stations in interiors

  • Gardening in my own spot/garden belong to my house - and not only some public settlement (like in Skyrim )

  • More Singing. Loved that soooo much at Goodneighbor! Maybe adding a skill/perk for singing and some companion reactions towards it :3

  • Marriage/Divorce? And also marriage/divorce having impact - last name change and so on... (I am not talking about the mushy fluffy sort - more like funny, snarky and for the lols. That one in Skyrim was a bit ... meh boring. )

  • Clutter not being so extremely havoccy... (Items like bottles, vases and so on that are placed on tables, shelves and other surfaces topple over, even if you weren't close. Or they drop to the floor when you re-enter the room).

  • Having companions comment on messy kill shots directly next to them - because they got splattered in blood. (I imagine Strong here *laughs*)

  • Romanced Companion & Dogmeat can be sent to your "Home" (e.g. in diamond city) and they fully utilize the interior - also going outside on the "balcony" or "garden" (like in Skyrim)

  • More banter and comments of companions (among each other, joining dialogues, having dialogues with them and random snarks). e.g. I would expect a certain characters comment particularly on creating drugs - either negatively or positively. That's what a game makes also feel more alive (referring to Baldurs Gate 1 and 2, Dragon Age 1 banter and dialogues). Yes there will be mods probably, but even the best modder won't have the original voice actors at hand. And the voice actors were really well chosen :) would be cool to get to hear more of them in Fallout 4.

  • Companions - fleshing out friendship / romance story and that also causing to have a more severe impact on your surroundings - how people & factions react to you and your friendship or romance. It should really matter with whom you are friends or in a relationship - and traveling the Commonwealth.

  • Companion Quests - related to your friendship or romance.e.g. Helping them to cope with exile. Becoming a ghoul (apparently the perk doesn't count for that ^^), Establishing a network for reporter yaddaydda... you name it.

  • Including a "Yes" Option and fitting comment to the BOS question if you had six with a non-human ^^ (I had Hancock standing next to me, expecting him to break into a guffaw at that question. But nada O_o I feel somehow robbed of a good lol )

  • Being able to take Dogmeat with you, even if you have a companion with you. He should not really count towards the companion counter, since he also doesn't affect the Lone Wanderer perk. (I know there will be mods for that, but mods have always a tendency to be quirky and buggy)

I so hope some of it will come with next DLC.

My 2 Cents

Yes, you can sort by value. You can also sort by weight. But you can't sort by the far more useful value *per* weight, which is what I was asking for. Perhaps I should have been clearer.

Verisimilitude. "Armor-Piercing Receiver"s are silly. Armor-Piercing *rounds* make a lot more sense. Ammo types go back to the very beginning with Fallout.

Also, they allow you to switch on the fly for different types of threats without carrying seventeen different guns around. So it's not clutter for clutter's own sake. Like the different types of grenades and mines, it has a purpose.

Sometimes they will. Sometimes they won't. I mentioned that "starve rather than tend crops" thing because that's something that actually happened to me. The check may not be happening often enough, or it may be bugged, or something else may be happening that I'm not taking into account. It's a touch obscure.

The management interface needs work. It's hard to use, and that makes it more difficult than it should be. Thus "Fake Difficulty." At least, I'm reasonably certain I used the term right per its tvtropes page.

And I just remembered something I need to add in.

I like what I like. I doubt I could explain it to you, and I don't feel obligated to.

Felicia was literally the only reason I played NV, and Mark of the Assassin was my favorite part of DA2 (which remains however my least favorite DA title.) Mileage will vary.

But you can't do both at the same time. All ammo-switch receivers are semi-auto.

Easily fixed with a mod, sure, but it was bugging me.

i like the game it turned out great , BUT i do have a few suggestions

:: Major ::

* companions

- Hold Ground button ( press Q on ground will move to that location and stay there )

( press Q on enemy will focus fire on that enemy )

- Follow me ( retreat to me ) button

:: minor ::

- Outfits ( they would work like Power Armor Frame but for normal clothing ) assignable to Key

- ( take u're power armor with u ) assignable to Key

- skip non-important cutscenes ( instant trade window please , less repeatable quest dialogue )

- show weapons ( there are so many good looking weapons but u don't see them )

1. I like how you can shoot the limbs off ghouls. Also, I like how gory the kills are in Fallout. It reminds me of the old Quake gibs.

I wish more games would allow you to shoot libs.

2. I love the power armor animations. Also love how you can customize power armor including a jet pack.

3. I love the weather especially fog and radiation storms with god rays.

The game is so fun to play....

Little things I'd like to see:

1. A "Scrap all junk into components" option at the workbench. When I need to set a town up on the other end of the map, I'd rather pick X pieces of rubber, Y pieces of concrete, and Z pieces of fiber as opposed to figuring out how many tin cans, toilets, plungers, etc., I have to lug.

2. Remaining careful with the "Legendary" items. I was happy to see that most "Legendary" bonuses were helpful but not game-altering and thus they didn't trivialize the normal gear. It should stay that way.

3. Opportunity to take on radiant missions that involve facing larger and fiercer mobs, once a very high level is reached (as opposed to bland level scaling of opponents)

4. More visible information about the settlers and their role in the settlement.

5. A tab on the Pip Boy that shows where each unlocked companion is.

6. Raising the Hard Cap on SPECIAL stat increase each time a Bobble Head is taken, so that there is no need to write down the location and wait until the attribute is 10 to return and pick the Bobble Head and make it 11. A quality of life issue.

7. Better ability to customize the controls on the PC. I don't want to have 4 functions on the same key. Sick and tired of exiting my power armor in the middle of battle.

Not sure if you know this, but if you put of a Town Bell or what ever it's called, you can activate it to "ring" it. In a few minutes the entire town will come to it and you can assign orders that way. Not my idea, I read if on the forums here. Forgot who mentioned it, but it works.
