Bug: Bullets Disappear at Long RangeDo No Damage

Post » Fri Jan 22, 2016 9:11 am

I'm sure many of you, especially those of you who have tried sniping, have noticed that bullets and lasers from any normal firearm or laser weapon simply disappear and don't affect NPCs or terrain in any way after a certain range. I'm not entirely sure the exact range at which bullets and lasers disappear, but it seems to be around the 150 meter ballpark or so, perhaps even less. The thing is though, this has nothing to do with a weapon's range or accuracy stat, because the range at which these projectiles disappear is consistent across every single weapon that this bug affects. Furthermore, this doesn't affect weapons that shoot visible projectiles such as the railway rifle, syringer rifle, or plasma weapons. For those weapons, they work as far as an NPC can render in, and it's ridiculous that a railway spike traveling at 250 feet/second can hit a human head from 300 meters away or something but a gauss rifle shooting a bullet at 10,000 feet/second can't hit a wall at half the distance.

If you google around, you can find many other users complaining of the same issue. I'd post some of the links to their threads, but I'm not given permission to post links on the forums, but googling "Fallout 4 Bullet Range" will let you find plenty of forums detailing the same issue.

It's also an issue I remember happening in Skyrim with arrows, and something similar happening in previous Fallout games but usually NPCs wouldn't render in before that distance. It's pretty annoying and destroys the point of long-range scopes as well as making sniping less satisfying. I'm just hoping this post gets enough traction that Bethesda patches it.
