Exporting NIF's to Blender ?

Post » Sun Jun 27, 2010 6:58 pm

Hey Guys,

Not sure if this is posiable. I would like to edit a Wooden Shack I've found in the wastes. Might extend it. Might make it 2 Storey or give it a basemant. I realise I will have work to do to create an interior and have 'trigger's for doors and markers for my character to 'appear' at on entering the house but that's for later ! I've only been editing in the G.E.C.K now for 2 days. First I need to learn how to export the current model as im going to use it as a basis for my MOD. I've located the shacks NIF in Nifscope after unpacking all the BSA's and can zoom around the shack now in Nifscope. My problem is how to Export it ? I can export it easily enough as an OBJ file and have saved it as shack.obj and also a shack.mtl file also appears ? What's that for ? Anyway now I need to open it. I am hoping to use blender to open and then modify the model! Is this possible and what do I need to do it !

Once again thanks for all advice. Gratefully appreciated.

Check this out: http://www.gamesas.com/bgsforums/index.php?showtopic=1051297&hl=

It also deals with animation, but all the stuff up until the animation process is what your looking for. Once you have the software setup, you can import a nif directly into blender, make the change and then export it from blender to a nif.

Actually I recommend you start with the tutorial on Modeling and Texture Sets that came from Artisten, Echonite and I. The animation tutorial is meant as an advanced tutorial for those that already understand Blender well-enough to get around. Once you master the first tutorial, then you'll be ready for the animation tutorial.

The Modeling and Texturing tutorial can be found via the link in my sig, and post any questions that you may have!

Cheers and luck,

Thanks Miax but im stil having trouble. Basically at this point Im struggling to get blender set up. Its the WHOLE Python,PyIFF,PyQt4,SIF Installation SAGA that I think is stopping me. Anyway when I goto Import a NIF in blender there is no option for :-

Select File->Import->NetImmerse/Gambryo (nif) from the top menu to open a NIF file. This will pop-up the file selection window.

I need a checklist of how to get Blender updated with the required NIF plugin. I havent found a clear or concise guide to this yet. I just get referred to the blender wiki then from there to python website then to the PyIFF site and so on untill my brain melts . HELP !!!!

What we need to do first is to get the Blender NIF scripts installed. Go http://sourceforge.net/projects/niftools/files/blender_nif_scripts/ and download the correct version for your operating system, preferably the Windows executable version. Then make sure Blender is Closed/not running, and just run that installer. It should guide you through the process. Then open Blender back up, load your model.

Then goto the Scripts menu, and select "Export". It will give you a large range of formats you can choose from, including the NetImmerse/Gamebroyo NIF format. Just choose that format. select the Fallout 3 button (which will set most of the right default settings), click on the material type (Wood, Metal, etc - they buttons are all right there). Then click Ok and your good to go :)

Scripts Window, same thing.

OK this has to be where I've got the problem.

I go to scripts Window and the whole screen just goes blank. If I go to the File Import menu function I have NO reference to NetImmerse/Gambryo. I cant for the life of me figure out how to install the plug-in correctly,It isn't as simple as you make out. It asks for PyiFF which asks for PyQt which asks for MS Visual C++ 2008 and then it Qskope still wont launch and asks for PyQt4. At some point SIP is also mentioned. I'm going round in circles and NEED detailed, accurate advice on how to set up blender for fallout 3.

I had the exact same problem, and after a few hours of messing with it I got pissed and walked away.

Came back with an attitude, exported the nif object as an .obj, then imported the .obj straight into blender using file->import->obj.
Edited the shape in Blender, saved. Imported the .obj into photoshop and remapped/retextured it, saved.
Reimported into Nifskope with the file->import->obj. Pointed the material to the new UV texture and copied any unchanged nodes from the original nif back in, saved.
Definately hack science and won't recommend it, but it's worked with everything i've tried it with so far, including the male and female body meshes.

Actually it was that simple for me. I can't really give you this level of instruction on how to install Blender, but there is a huge forum on Blender.org that you can post in to get this kind of help. It could depend on the OS your running too, I'm not an expert on the mechanics of installing Blender.

You do need Python and PyFFi, which it should give you links to. I recommend posting to the blender forums and give them a detailed description of how you are trying to install it. Its probably just an error in the version on one of the tools, or a wrong install order, or something similar. The folks there Are the experts than they can get you up and running. :)

Luck!

OK I Got this solved. Basically I un-installed EVERYTHING related to Blender and then deleted any residual files/folders from my Hard drive that had the words python, blender,PyFFI, Script etc etc etc. Im sure you get the drift here :) I then visited this site :- http://cs.gamesas.com/constwiki/index.php/Installing_Blender#PyFFI and followed theses instructions precisely. Importing NIF files is now an option :D Whew FINALLY. Not sure what the problem was but I had python 2.6.4 and 3.1 installed. Might have , probably did, mess up install order also but it works now and I've learned a little as well :D

Thanks for your help all but it was the Blender Forums.org that pointed me to the site that solved it for me ! Considering that this is actually hosted by the guys at bethesda someone here should have known about this page and linked me to it !!! As it was the chaps over at Blender.org did the job. Must be a sharper team over there :P Anyway jobs done !

Thanks again . Wont be long I guess until I will be needing you again ! :D

While I'm happy for you, did you Really need to insult me and anyone else that helped? Thats ridiculous, rude and un-appreciated! Choose your words more carefully next time please.

Good luck with your work.

It wasnt my intention to insult you miaximus. I need all the help I can and as a complete newbie im finding it very frustrating learning curve at the moment. If anything It was a little dig at the fact that it took guys on a seperate forum to direct me to a page on your forums which I found to be a bit ironic after Ive spent maybe in the region of 2 days trying to sort this damn problem out here ! However every reply Ive recieved is a new sliver of knowledge and I appreciate them all. Well maybe not the ones which send me of on wild goose chases that dont answer my origional question ! However I know the deal , I spent years as tech support in a call center and the normal attitude was to throw the customer a bone and hope he didnt come back rather than actually deal with the problem. Im sure the tutorials you mentioned will help me but people really need to read/listen to the content of posts before replying to them. I feel like I ask a straight forward question or questions and the replys I get often diverge and fracture into totally unrelated issues or areas, or asume a level of knowledge or competance i currently dont posses. Anyway I never intended to insult you but if I did then I think you should Toughen the hell up, boy, and not be so damn sensitive. Thats just my opinion and in no way reflects the opinions of others, im sure, or your right to express yourself! I sincerely hope we can put this misunderstanding behind us but if not then I wont loose sleep over it. Im scots after all and well lets just say being in the thick of things is so ingrained into our culture we actually enjoy a good scrap ! That being said us scots were the minds behind the industrial revolution that made the british empire among other things and were more than just a bunch of drunk jocks itching for a scrap although we like to do that too. Anyway you americansowe a lot to us scots and if you cant remember that then you should at least remember to show respect to foriegn nations and their culture. Anyway Im tired and my rant is over. I cant really remember what I was angry about. Maybe the fact that youtook what i said to heart and then told me to choose my words. Hell , I still believe in FREEDOM of speech if nothing else. Meh whats the use. Im off back to blender.

Those links are on the post I linked to :)

@Highlander2007
If your using a 3rd party app, the best place to find info on it would be the 3rd parties forum . There are a few apps you can use to make models for the GECK (3DSMax, Maya, Lightwave, etc), not just blender.

If the blender people pointed you back here, there's a good chance a http://www.gamesas.com/bgsforums/index.php?act=Search&CODE=simpleresults&sid=256f5d33e258a43b0919e553d67911aa&highlite=%2BPython+%2BBlender+%2BPyFFI (+Python +Blender +PyFFI) would have found it. Search has been invaluable to me.

Perhaps post a link to the topic that cleared it up for you so that when others come here asking the same question, they'll find it on your post. And from what I've seen, it's not that they're "throwing you a bone", it's just that the same question has been asked before and answered by the same people. Rule #1: Search first. ^_^
