I was trudging along through a thunderstorm on a dark night, overburdoned and actually a little bored because there was not much that I could see through the darkness. The beam of my power armor's headlamp seemed to reach no farther than the end of my nose, and the monotony was broken only by those occasional flashes of lightning. The steady "clomp, clomp" of my footsteps was almost hypnotic in feeding the monotony of the long trek.
Suddenly, a lightning flash showed a huge structure ahead... I saw it only for a second in the brilliant flash of light, looming up in front of me like some strange beast of gigantic proportions. Intriguing, mysterious, and enigmatic, it sat across my path as if it had been awaiting my arrival for two hundred years to show me... what?
It was isolated, in an area that had few other surviving structures, and its solitude added to the mystery that it gave me. Its unusual shape gave me no clues as to its use or intended purpose, and my heart beat a little faster as I walked its perimeter looking for an entrance. Another bolt of lightning showed me that it did indeed have an entrance, now the question uppermost in my mind was whether the entrance was usable...
When I got close enough and tried it, the door swung open granting me entrance into the general gloom of it's truly huge interior. My expectations were high as I searched the place but I found...
Nothing of interest. Some consoles with various gauges and buttons that did nothing, high catwalks and metal stairs that led nowhere, various small bits of clutter like duct tape, and the entire place inhabited by only two feral ghouls. Thinking I might face a horde of feral ghouls, I killed the first one I encountered, but regretted having done so when I found only one more ghoul wandering about the huge empty space. I left the second one alive, though it would probably have been kinder to just kill him. Maybe the first one would respawn to keep him company, eh?
There was only one item of interest in that whole facility (and I could do nothing with it), so I sadly left to continue my trudge toward someplace to unload this stuff.
Later, when I thought about the whole encounter, I had to wonder why such an opportunity was left so... flat, and unfulfilling. My imagination had been fired to a frenzy pitch by the building initially, but then it was left with nowhere to go, and no satisfaction. Just another empty place of no interest other than the shape and placement of the building.
I'm really enjoying FO4, don't get me wrong, but... I think that a lot of opportunities were passed over, with this building being high on the list. If I had created this place as a mod or something, I would have had something interesting inside, eh? Perhaps a ghoul who, while not feral, is completely insane and commands an army of feral Reavers guarding a fabulous treasure of pre-war deodorant or something. Maybe Elvis' body entombed there in the darkness, glowing softly in a radioactive backlight... or what if there was an army of assaultrons waiting there in the darkness for some fool to just open the door and let them out?
Anyway, there are so many structures in the game, and so few with actually interesting content. I mean, who can really see the Sphinx without feeling the wonder... and even the pyramids have content of value after thousands of years, eh?
The gunners are another opportunity missed, IMO...
