(PC) Fallout 4 Ram speed testing

Post » Mon Jan 25, 2016 3:29 am

So i have read multiple performance benchmarks and it seems fallout 4 benefits from faster speed ram. All the test i saw where up to a maximum memory speed of 2400mhz i'm curious as to the point of diminishing returns. ddr4 is available right now at speeds of 3866mhz i'm curious to see how far memory speed can scale. the benchmark from the gamespot forums does a great job of showing this with a test system with an i7 4770k Gtx 980ti and ddr3 memory at 1133mhz and 2400mhz and the differences are:

1080p

1133mhz min 51 fps max 72 fps

2400mhz min 85 fps max 106 fps

so anyone out their running over 2400mhz ram?

i'd like to investigate this myself but i have ddr4 2400 and can't afford to go out and buy more memory for an experiment. So if you do have over 2400mhz we can come up with a standardised benchmark area and run at max setting 1080p

i could always overclock and see how far i get and i imagine not many people have ram faster that 2400mhz, but if you out there feel free to post and even if you don't have faster ram feel free to post with speculation or facts as why this game see's large improvements in performance from ram speed when most games dont see any difference in performance at all.

I'm running:

os: windows 10 pro

Motherboard: msi z107a gaming pro

cpu: Intel i7 6700k at 4.7ghz

ram: team group elite 32gb ddr4 2400mhz

storage:Samsung sm951 512gb m.2 ssd (Fallout 4 installed on) 2x WD green 3tb in raid 1 with a 60gb Kingston v300 as a cache drive for the hard drives

gpu:Inno 3D gtx 980ti hybrid black edition Core:1513mhz memory:7450mhz

I don't understand your question!

If you have allready DDR4 ram modules at 2400MHz then you are good to go...

----------

This test shows differend clock speeds with DDR3 memory modules.

There is an performance increase. Haswell processors scaling well with Ram speeds up to 2400 MHz.

However not every game has that advantage. Now we know that Fallout 4 has some potential with higher clocked ram. (and another game that has the same benefit is Starcraft II)

--------

However this one shows DDR4 memory modules scaling capabilities, but i thing that's sort of useless. Who would downgrade DDR4 memories to 1133?

I don't see the reason for it. Maybe only for benchmark purposes.

It's obvious that you will have a performance penatly!

Its at least 10USD more for each clock speed increase, for little to no performance improvement (DDR4). I purchased DDR4-2666 because for the most part it was the fastest memory at the default voltage (1.2v). Yes, some DDR4-2800 (maybe DDR4-3000) is 1.2V but very uncommon for some reason.

From my experiences XMP has problems working without major tweaking, so I purchased something not too expensive.
