I went and discovered the ship again on top of the tall building after it crashed there. I talked to ironsides and he was talking about doing more work for him to advance the ship but I didn't get another mission from him. How come?

There's not another quest to proceed their mission unfortunately, but you do get a funny hat and his Captain's Quarters... which is probably the worst option for a player home.

no kidding, I got the room then wanted to do a little redecorating and picked something up...then was immediately assaulted by a ship full of homicidal robots.

The quarters are cramped.
