Would you want a voiced protagonist in the next TES game?

Would you want a voiced protagonist in the next Elder Scrolls game in a system just like Fallout 4 (as in one voice for men and one for women)?



If more voice options were available, would you want to?



Personally I would vote no for both, but I wanted to see what everybody here thinks.

I think there's another topic for this, although I can't recall if it was closed or not due to reaching the post limit. There were two at one point, I think.



Anyway, for TES, I don't want it as it was in Fallout, purely due to a lack of variety which is necessary for TES.



If they were to have a variety of voices that would encompass enough of a range for possible characters, I am more open to the idea, provided that they expand on dialogue options in Fallout 4, even to the extent of having a lot of fluff.



My only concern, if variety were met, would be the impact on moddability, even as someone who has not historically used mods. If they upped the scale of the games, in terms of the number of factions, a larger map, more faction dispositional consequences/choices that shape the policies/aspects of the world in a tangible way, expanded upon dungeons, expanded upon dialogue per NPC, and companion dialogue as a whole, with speech consequences/checks, settlement stuff, or anything else that might be something mods would expand on that could be negatively impacted by a voiced protagonist, then I would be ultimately for it.

As a Fallout fan and a TES fan, I would have thought variety like that was necessary too before the actual game came out.

Yes. Having voiced characters allows you to better simulate, pace and design interactions. It allows you to more solidify anchor characters in the world, expands the range of actions and responses, and allows you to make NPCs responses more understandable and natural.

BUT



We aren't at the point yet where you can achieve the benefits of a voiced protagonist without sacrificing too much in regards to variety and character customization. Particularly in games like TES where you don't play from a set background, the loss to customization remains unacceptable, and the technology (or financial resources) just isn't there to mitigate that problem to an acceptable extent.

Honestly? Yes and No. I can see people's point about voiced protags as it does add in some new connection to an otherwise devoid of life silent protag that barely stands out

No, because I can see the point of others going "it kinda hurts role-playing" which while I don't agree with personally I can understand the complaint.

The easy way out of this? Do voiced protags but allow the player to mute the player character so we also have silent protags. All about options. Now the dialogue options stuff from Fallout 4? No and I won't be sad if it goes away.

I like the voiced protagonist in Fallout 4. I feel like it really fits the wasteland. The Elder Scrolls, However, would be a lot worse with a voiced protagonist. The Elder Scrolls world allows you to customize your character so much more than, say, Fallout. The reason for this is that you can play as any one of 10 different races, each with their own attributes and history. Having a voiced protagonist would take away a big part of the RPG style because, no matter what armor you wear, no matter what dialogue options you choose, it will always sound like you are playing as the same person. In my opinion, that would defeat the whole basis of the Elder Scrolls series; It would turn it from a series of RPG's with action elements to an open world action game with RPG elements.

Problem is that TES has lots of races, having Orcs, Bosmer and Khajiit sound like would not sound good, it would be far worse as the other of your race sounds totally different.

Its not only Khajiit speach, its also physical reasons for it. Add that an old Orc barbarian will sound different from an young Orc mage



I liked the female voice in FO4, but I don't see how it would work in TES.


And yes voiced player is unrelated to the idiot dialogue system, you could have an voiced player in Skyrim or FO:NV if you had recorded it, you needed to change some lines who are not designed to be spoken that is all.

ESO is the same generation game as FO4 and don't have voiced actor.

I would want one, but not at the expense of anything. So if they have to cut race choice because of the voice, then no. I want the freedom to choose race, and i want the dialogue we have in TES. Truth is i prefer a voiced protagonist, but not every game is served best by having one either. So we'll see.

The more I play Fallout 4 the more I can say "NO". I'm not playing my character in Fallout, I'm playing what Bethesda wants, much like Shepard, Hawke and the Inquisitor. It was nice the first time around when I was new to the game and discovering how it plays, but now that I want to Roleplay my own character I find it impossible. Maybe if the backstory was not constantly shoved down your throat I might be fine with a voice protagonist, maybe, but I doubt it.


Currently waiting for mods to come to the PS4 so I can mute them and get rid of that horrible dialog wheel.



The only voice acting I want in TES, is the one found in ESO, being able to pick the sound of your grunts/yells.

I dont know what you mean by a physical reason, but Khajiit dont have to talk the way they do. ( Im assuming thats what you meant)


As for a voiced protagonist in TES, I wouldnt mind it way down the line, when its alot easier for Bethesda to give a bunch of different voice options for each race without sacrificing story, gameplay work, and graphical fixes. But as for TES VI, absolutely not. it would distract from the other things that we so enjoy.

I've only played one game with a voiced protagonist (SW:TOR) and I found that there were two things I didn't like about it. One, too often the voice did not match my character. And two, even when it did match one character it rarely matched any of my other characters.


For me, a voiced protagonist severely limits replayablilty. In SW:TOR I ended up making one character for each class and then quitting the game and moving on to another game. I just could not endure hearing the same voice recording over and over and over and over and over.


I can only speak for myself. I don't want my assassin Nord to sound like my paladin Nord and I don't want my paladin Nord to sound like my mage Nord and I don't want my mage Nord to sound like my barbarian Nord and I don't want my barbarian Nord to sound like my ranger Nord.
