Ultimate Performance from modded Morrowind

Post » Tue Jan 26, 2016 9:39 pm

Not 100% mod related but still relevant.

I bumped my gaming PC up to 24 gigs of ram for Christmas :) This allows me to use a ram disk for games.

Installing MW completely into ram make a massive difference in play-ability especially modded up MW.

It makes a even bigger difference with Skyrim, load times are near instant on most stuff.

There is lots of ram disk software out there that make it easy to move stuff in & out of the ram disk & you obviously need to have everything backed up because the ramdisk is gone when you shut down or reboot.

The Asus ram disk is the best I have tried hands down ... even with Steam it was a couple of clicks & you don't even have to change your desktop shortcuts!

It took less than 2 mins to move 12 gigs to the ram disk.

I have a solid state HD & the ram disk is still way faster!

It would be hard to go back to the old way of playing after playing with a ram disk!

That is a KooL way to play. But by the time you have transferred the data to your ram disk my game has already loaded on my ssd. When you say load times are you talking about loading the program or once the program is started that the program itself works faster? If so then load screens while your playing Skyrim would certainly benefit from this kind of set up. In any event I will have to look into this and see if the benefits are worth spending the money. I'm saving for a new video card so this will have to wait. Thanks for sharing :)

Ooo I shall seek this out today. My morrowinds has been so unplayable lately. Not completely only when I'm near a certain exterior or near a door I get a cotd. Which is how all my morrowind play thru ends. ????

Obiviously it takes a couple minutes to initially load but after that everything is a lot faster. cell loading is basically instant.

RAMDisk is unlikely to solve ctd issues.... also, instant loading times are great and all, but are there any real improvements in FPS or anything? Sure, stuttering should be reduced, but once the game is loaded, there is probably no significant difference, right?

Awesome. That's good to know. I have two extra 8 GB sticks of RAM that I bought when I built my PC thinking I would do a ram disk but never got around to installing. Maybe its time to bump my rig up to 32 gigs and check out the Asus Ram disk. The only issue I have ever had in modded Morrowind is a slight stutter whenever it loads a new cell when travelling in the open world and it sounds like a RAM disc would solve this.

I have not tested that but I will .... in theory not having to access the HD at all should equal more FPS

The IO bus is still the biggest bottle neck on a PC

I tested the FPS in RD vs normal & the RD doesn't give you more FPS but it does keeps the FPS from fluctuating as much.

That fast eh? What program do you use to copy such large files? Windows is terrible with large transfers like that.

Your post has really peaked my interest. I was thinking about buying a second ssd for my X-DOCK but I may have to consider this.

I'm using the new Asus ram disk software & it is amazing! I have a SSD as the system disk & even with the RD set to load on boot it still boots faster than it did with a spinning disk HD & that is 12gigs loading into a 16gig RD!

I don't know how it does it so fast.

Last night I was swapping MW, Fallout 3 & Skyrim in & out of the ram disk & it took the longest for skyrim as it is 12 gigs. 2 min to move the files in & a little less than 2 min to unload them & put them back where they were. The other games took less time both ways because they are around 8 gigs each. Certainly fast enough to warrant doing it for any game "big" game.

Unfortunately the only way to get the Asus ram disk at the moment is to get one of their new Motherboards or Gaming machines.

I'm sure they will release it altogether soon. That has been their MO on other stuff they did this with in the past. Or you can probably find it in the wild if you look a bit.

I am kind of a techno noob, but can I ask why you unload them and put them back? Wouldn't it be better to just copy them into the RAM disc and then just dump the memory when you reboot/shutdown your PC? That way you are not constantly rewriting 12 gigs of data to your SSD. It seems like constantly rewriting that data would increase the chances of data corruption and it will also wear out your SSD faster.

At least for games that keep the game ini files and save files in a seperate location, it seems like this would be a preferable way to set it up?

I don't unload if I'm playing a certain game for a while ... I was just testing

Ahh, okay. Thanks for clarifying. Can't wait until they release this to the masses.

I bought a high end ASUS motherboard a couple years ago (Sabertooth Mark I) and am happy with it but it didn't have their new RAM disc software. I should check if they would sell an existing customer the RAM disc software . . .

ramdisk is not a new idea. In the early days of personal computers - 1980s, people were trying all types of things to get around the then restrictions for memory and memory allocation. IIRC, there were both hardware and software workarounds. You might check out a place like SourceForge.net too.

Not a new Idea at all ... I used one alot on my Amiga in the 90's .... those were not like these new ones though.

FYI: I just found out you can go to Asus.com and go to the support tab of any of the new gaming motherboards & download that ramdisk software I'm using.

Not new, but finding one that is easy to use and that can handle enough RAM to load an entire modded TES game is not that easy. So thanks for pointing this one out. I will have to see if ASUS will let me download it for my motherboard.

Could you provide a link please. I tried looking for it but since I don't know what it is named it makes it difficult to use their search bar.
