User interface overhaul, what the UI should have been by default.

The only intelligent way to add mods to a video game is to 1) decide what you want to change and 2) find mods to make those changes. Dumping mods into a game simply because other people use them is the wrong way to think about mods.

That said, here is the Nexus' http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/topalltime/?advlt=0 That should give you an idea of which mods the community values the most.

Besides the mods Kirottu already mentioned

http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/22650/? -- expands and enlivens the Companions Questline

The Paarthurnax Dilemma -- let's you tell off the Blades

Cutting Room Floor -- Adds back content cut from the game

Alternate Start Live Another Life -- lets you start the game without going through Helgen (you still can if you like) and it doesn't break the main quest.

Shezrie's Old Hroldon Town -- adds a town and several npc's beside Old Hroldon Inn

If you have a graphics obsession, look at the http://wiki.step-project.com. You might also find the http://skyrimgems.com/ interesting. And then there's always the various http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/categories/ because as Pseron Wyrd says, only you can decide what changes you really want to make for your game.

I am a huge proponent ofhttp://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/9286/?or http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/59849/?. I blend features from both personally. However, they both change the game rather radically, so they might not be your cup of tea.

Obviously, SkyUI is a necessity imo, it just adds so much functionality, and optimizes the game so much better for the PC.

If you haven't played with http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/54527/?... erm, done a play through with Sofia... never mind, she is a great companion mod that is well balanced, has a great personality, hilarious dialog (most of the time), and is perfectly lore friendly.

http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/29624 (if you are using SkyRe) or http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/12951/? (Not compatible with the SkyRe Race Module) is an absolute must for me, as they add so much more to character customization options.

If you felt like the really shallow pool of 34 enchants was never enough, http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/58635/? is amazing. The enchantments range from as powerful as vanilla buffs, to amusing things like the "Gladiator's Glory" which gives a small amount of gold for performing kill moves, to old favorites like Circle Of Protection.

Speaking of kill moves, http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/56980/?lets you tweak the frequency, perspective, and perk requirements of all kill moves. I like it, but I am kind of a kill move junkie.

http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/40491/? (Currently private as a new update is coming out) andhttp://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/31264 are amazing if you want to ramp up the difficulty of enemies by making the AI better and adding more diverse foes, rather then making the vanilla (and frankly boring) enemies more then just hit sponges.

http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/27644/?and http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/19733 are also huge on my list. Nothing bothers me more then seeing a Nord bandit wearing Elven Glided Armor. All of the weapons and armor are truly amazing quality and fit perfectly into the vanilla experience.

Some random others you might want to check out are http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/34508,http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/14037, http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/34612, http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/30533, http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/12977, http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/26228/, http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/44091, and http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/67663/?.

As stated above, it really comes down to what you want out of your modded Skyrim experience. I mean, there is so much out there. It is frankly amazing to me. My mod list is just, so huge, it is becoming rather ridiculous. There have been days where I play Skyrim most of the day, but there have been many more that I have been on the Nexus all day just in awe at all the amazing things modders have done with this game.

If I wanted to play the best 10 mods that are stable I would probably select a couple mods of http://afkmods.iguanadons.net/index.php?app=core&module=search&do=user_activity&search_app=downloads&mid=4 since all mods he have released are stable IMO.

Other than that what others already suggested SKSE, SkyUI, unofficial patches, Trade and Barter, AFT, Apachii's Sky Hair, Elys Skyrim Uncapper to mention a few stable mods.
