Dogmeat Companion

Post » Thu Jan 28, 2016 5:03 pm

I read when the game first came out that Dogmeat didn't count as a companion, so you cold have a companion plus Dogmeat. I can now confirm that if you take on a companion, that Dogmeat has to leave. I'm running the Beta patch, so perhaps this is just now being implemented. Does anyone know if this change means that the Lone Wanderer perk no longer applies if you have Dogmeat as a companion?

I'm running the beta patch as well but it was like this before also. Dogmeat will be dismissed when taking another companion. only time I had him plus another was when using dogmeat later in the game when the MQ forces it.

Also maybe its just me but dogmeat is simply named "Dog" for me now that I am on the beta patch. I swear he was called dogmeat before.

No he counts as a follower and you can only have one. He does not count against Lone Wanderer although the rest do.

Not sure where I read that about having Dogmeat plus another companion. Maybe I was under the influence of Jet at the time -- or more likely, just too much ice cream.

@PenGun: Whew, glad to hear!

@Resident: Hmmm, he shows up as Dogmeat for me. Have you tried speaking to him?

He will be renamed when an NPC calls him Dogmeat, so when doing Getting a clue if not before.

also, Dogmeat does not have any companionship progress, thus the reason why he gets perk upgrades in your own perks. I think it's in Charisma.

ok, this might be it. I usually skip Red Rocket and go to Goodneighbor. I bypass Concord as well and start the MQ from Goodneighbor. So Nick always introduces me to Dogmeat.

However on my current character that I am beta testing the new patch, is likely never to do the MQ so I went and got dogmeat from Red Rocket. he's simply named "Dog" and he does follow me around.

Dogmeat is definitely a companion, so you can't add him to others.

Lone Wanderer is definitely worth getting though, especially when you're using a lot of stealth and don't want a companion getting you spotted. Plus it adds damage resistance and carrying capacity.

I hope Lone Wonderer perk continues to apply with Dogmeat as companion.

Both LW & Dogmeat Perks are in Chaisma Perk tree.

So why would we have to give up one for other?

I know we have other companion boosting perk in there too, but this applies to all other companions while that dogmeat perk only works on one companion.

If we invest whole perk points there.. we shouldn`t have to give it up so easily.. and dogmeat does not even benefit a lot from other companion boosting perks.
