Not SPECIAL enough!

Post » Fri Jan 29, 2016 12:28 pm

I have seen some complaints/thoughts about the new perk system and I'd like to point out one of my own.

The problem with removing skills, is That they are actually still there - in the background. Sounds good right?

Well not exactly. The problem is that in order to max certain 'skills' you instead have to max special to get the side benefit.

So if you want to pass all speech checks for example you need about an 11 or so in charisma, previously you just need a 100 in Speech.

Getting permanent 11 charisma isn't exactly easy, or recommended.

Now certainly there are consumables/wearables whatever to get you there. The point is certain things can be a lot harder to achieve now. My thing about speech is just one example.

Meh... It all evens out in the end. My character is in the 70's now and she's pretty much maxed out all her SPECIAL and gotten all the perks she actually wants. Now I'm just randomly choosing things that I really have no interest in.

Last night I noticed that I had 9 perk points to distribute. Frankly, I couldn't figure out where to put them.

I don't have a problem with removal of skills. But it seems to me like there are a lot less (maybe none) skill check requirements.

For example the bomb in megaton. If you had a explosives skill of X you could disarm it.

I liked it when the game was like this. It gave me reasons to make new characters. To try new things and rp new characters around that play style.

I get that there are a massive number of skills and I would have to play an ungodly amount of time to become a jack of all trades. But even if I'm playing a melee or ranged character they still progress through the world in too similar of ways.

It's made bypassing gates easier. Never being able to lockpick because you made a low pe melee character was bs back when we were limited by max lvl. You picked a bad example though, you don't need max special for any of the skill replacing perks but lockpicking is low on the list.

Cha is useless for speech checks, with 1 cha you can pass every check in thr game with clothing and drugs. Your argument is invalid.

I am quite annoyed that I feel like I have to dress like a clown to talk to people (I don't do drugs). Don't recall ever having to do that in prior games.

And skills you needed before to Hack and Lockpick, now are perks and have a required SPECIAL score to get (granted it's small). I do think that many Perks in the prior games did also require SPECIAL scores or even Skills. See chart here:

http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Fallout_3_perks

But a SKILL (like Hacking), not a PERK, now requiring a SPECIAL score is a problem IMO for initial character building. I mean it makes sense that for someone to hack a PC they may need a certain amount of INT, but some of those perks are way out there. I've retired 3 characters so far, all around level 35-40, and none of them had any SPECIAL scores of 7 or higher. I could have, but there are so many perks that just seem required, like Locksmith, Hacking, Local Leader, Gun damage perks, crafting (armor, guns, melee), etc., that there's little opportunity to get higher SPECIAL scores unless you play well past level 50+ (which I'm doing now) which makes for a very boring game.

Regarding charisma and speech checks. I can't fathom they appearently did away with the lockout mechanism regarding terminals because people would save/reload all the time, and then went for the speech system we have?! People do exactly the same during those :D

You don't have to convince every single npc with your negotiation either. Doesn't make sense, espacially if you don't want to make a sacrifice and put some points in charisma.

But I agree about the hacking perk, lockpicking perk etc. that just seems a bit silly.
