Buying vs Crafting

So I'm curious. Do you prefer crafting everything or just buying it? Or somewhere in between.

The funny thing about crafting. Is that you can actually still mod just by finding the mod for it and detachching/reattaching it (I actually do not like this feature because once I found out about it it really cheapened crafting for me).

Crafting only gives you more control over what or rather when you get a specific mod. Secondarily, weapon mods aside from those related to damage have no affect if you use VATS.

Crafting is cooler since "you made it", but you could also get away with slapping some points into caps collector/fortune finder/scrounged and be swimming in enough caps to buy just about whatever and for-go the whole trash collecting/crafting side game.

Vendors also sell some very powerful unique armor/weapons.

I'm still on the fence though about which is better.

Crafting, but you left out "finding". Some of my most impressive weapons I've found (i.e. my Junkie's Gauss).

Finding items is a given.

It makes sense to leave it out.

I do both...

Ill buy an awesome gun, then craft a suppressor for it.

I avoid crafting as much as possible, though.

So I guess I prefer buying my weapons...

I am naturally of a crafting mindset, so the first time I played I got the crafting perks as soon as I was able and ended up maxing all of them. For my current playthrough, however I decided not to craft for RP reasons. I'm lvl 22 now and I've found it accelerated my combat abilities quite a bit because it let me spend my early perks on combat effectiveness instead of crafting.

Also, as you've discovered, the Bethesda habit of making the game playable for every playstyle means that the Lone Wanderer/Non-Builder style is going to have enough money to function. That means that heavy crafters are going to naturally have WAY more money than they need - especially since they have no need to buy anything. Point being that this character has yet to find something he wanted to buy that I couldn't afford.

Buying as long as i'm short of perks to craft some mods. Buying weapons that have the mods i want, then using those mods on the legendary one ;)

Later crafting only.

On a sidenote:

At about Level 80 i discovered a mod named "Legendary Modification"

If you set it to "survival" difficulty, it's not much of a game breaker.

It uses a unique item to craft legendary mods.

For example:

You need twelve of those to make a "two shot" weapon.

Recycling a Legendary gives one or two of those items, depending on the mod they have.

I still try to "farm" legendarys that i want because it's easier. ;)

I'm on my third play-through. In this one, my character doesn't buy anything. She doesn't interact with vendors at all -- no buying, no selling. It's as if vendors simply don't exist. She doesn't even buy raw mats. If she can't craft it or find it in the wild, she does without. It means she needs to carry a few extra weapons because she never knows what sort of ammo she'll have. She's in the mid-20s now, level-wise, and It has been a challenge (especially finding decent ammo), but I'm enjoying it immensely.

I love crafting. I want more options like I have seen in some mods out there. Especially creating Legendary Items!
