What is the logic behind keeping areas unmarked on map?

Post » Sun Jan 31, 2016 9:16 am

I don't have an issue with having unmarked areas on my map. Discovery is one of the pleasures of playing. However, once I have found a place, it deserves, in my opinion, to get a map marker/icon. At the very least, I should be able to drop a map marker on it.

I recently found a neat little area in downtown, but I was over-encumbered. I stored a few items in a nearby dumpster with the intention of returning after a quick jaunt home. For some reason, I was not able to drop a map marker on it. Goodness knows, I tried. Thus, I had to rely on memory. Unfortunately for me, I had a devil of a time re-finding the place. Boston alleyways aren't the easiest to navigate in present day, much less when they're filled with rubble and raiders.

I'd love to know the logic behind having an area not show up on my map after I've walked through it several times. I don't care if it doesn't reward discovery exp -- just give me the icon so I can find my way back there again. Does anyone know why Beth decided to do it this way? I can't remember if it was this way in FO3.

For the record, I *was* eventually able find it again and, thank goodness, my hoard belongings were still safely stored in the dumpster. Whew!

So you want to be able to fast travel everywhere?

From my experience this game is one of those that benefits from having a pen and paper handy so that you can jot down some things and navigate your own way around.

There are already too many useless marked areas. Not sure why you couldn't place a map marker, because it always works for me. Would be great if we could have some filter or to tick on/off locations, especiall in boston downtown.

Maybe not fast travel, but maybe being able to mark it, so we know that there is another place to visit/ explore. Yes, I know we can place custom marker, but only 1 at the time, and there is more than 1 unmarked location

Nothing is too far from any other existing marker that you cannot get back to it easily from one of them. When I'm collecting the various Power Armors that are not dead-on a map marker, I take 5 seconds to note the nearest one, FT back to Sanctuary with it, then FT right back to that area.

Even if you're talking about Hub 360 or 35 Court, there are several places nearby that are close enough to FT to and from, getting back to your last location by sprinting. Nothing is more than a 30 second sprint away.

Even if my sole purpose in having the icon displayed is so I can fast travel, so what? I happen to like fast travel and use it frequently. I get the impression you disapprove. But a discussion of fast travel wasn't the reason I asked the initial question. I'm curious to understand why there isn't an icon or some way to mark the location (or any unmarked location) so I could return. Pen and paper is nice but not nearly as efficient as making an X on the map.

That's part of what makes this puzzling/frustrating. Just like you, placing custom markers has generally worked for me in the past. However, in this case, for some reason, it wouldn't register. Had I been able to do that, there wouldn't have been a problem. I like your suggestion of filters.

I like this, too. Having multiple flags would be great, even if we didn't have the capability to name them. Just to know, "Hey, I found something here and I'd like to be able to return" would be helpful.

I've never understood the point of being able to place a custom marker that you could not FT to. You can relocate the FT arrival point in settlements, so why not do the same for custom markers?

I agree 100%. Problem was, I mis-remembered the directions. For some reason, I thought my desired location was northwest of Diamond City. Turns out, it was northEAST, so I spent a lot of (frustrating) time running about chasing something that wasn't there :D. But you're right, getting "close" and then running is my usual method of handling unmarkeds.

No i don't disapprove of fast travel.

I used to do it myself.

The point of marked locations, is so you can fast travel there.

What i do is make a mental note of adjacent landmarks, so that I can return to them.

With the custom marker that you place yourself, I find it doesn't always work when i try to mark a spot that i am already at, so i will remember that my destination is for example two thirds of the way between two marked points that line up, or i will place my marker where i am able and use it as a bearing point.

I actually like that moment of desperation that can occur when you can't immediately find what you have left behind.

I know I'm gonna come of as a [censored], but unmarked locations are unmarked.
There are lots of places throughout the wastes with a small point of interest.
it would make the map a mess if every little nook of the game that offered something had a map marker.

I'm not sure why you weren't able to add a map marker (sometimes removing one is a bit finicky for me)
Perhaps a patch is needed? Any rate, the intention is to give you a marker for such things.

Myself, I keep a notepad and pen handy to mark locations- mostly for locks/terminals I can't access until later in the game, but occasionally for unmarked locations.

To me unmarked locations are hidden little gems to find, off the beaten road.

Perhaps that's what the problem was. I was trying to custom mark a place where I was currently standing. I'm not sure if I've ever tried that before. Perhaps you can only mark a destination and not your current location. I'll have to test that.

No need to worry, you're not coming across as anything that could be censored :). I'm another who keeps a list of places I want to revisit.

Indeed they are. However, once I've found them, I should be able to make note of them on the map.

Perhaps an ideal solution would be to have just a dot. Wouldn't necessarily need the ability to fast travel to the dot, because it's not a true destination. No fancy icon, taking up space. Give me the option to place a plain dot (or multiple dots) on the map to indicate that I found "something" here. If I want more info than that, I can make pen-and-paper (or phone) notes.

Drop a line of Salisbury Steaks to the nearest marked location then fast travel/travel later to the marked location and follow the steaks, problem solved

Agreed. Second playthrough and I've stumbled across loads of little bits I've missed. A hut in the middle of a radioactive pond, a bank with an unlooted vault and a subway station where they appear to have been gambling on cage fighting are all little gems I stumbled upon today.

Not saying where they are, but they are good examples supporting the quoted statement.
