Sheffield is dead. It's all my fault.

It started off as a simple gesture of kindness. I gave him a Nuka Cola. A few days later, I was back in Diamond City and asked him what he thought about coming to work for me. I sent him to my settlement in Sanctuary Hills. I got him out of those tattered rags and gave him clean set of military fatigues.

As the settlement grew, I decided to move my base of operations to Starlight Drive In. I asked Sheffield to come along. Since he'd done such a great job tending crops, I decided I'd make him a shop keeper. I didn't want him around weapons, you know, with his drinking problem, so I put him in charge of the Armor Emporium. He did great work.

One day I arrived home to find a battle in progress. A group of gunners had attacked. My security force held their own, settlers joined in. We killed 20 gunners.

As I was walking the settlement assessing the damage, I saw him. I knew it was him because my two male vendors wear the black vest with slacks and my weapons shop vendor was at his station.

Poor Sheffield. They didn't just kill him. They blew his head completely off.

It was all my fault. If I'd just left him in Diamond City, he'd still be alive. How could I go on knowing I'd cost this man his life?

Simple. I took his clothes and promoted another field hand to Armor Shop Keeper.

How on earth did you even manage to change his clothing? The tramp doesn't even let me trade anything with him!

It's not your fault he couldn't defend himself. The guy was just looking for a handout who just so happened to get a bullet instead.

Without problems - when you meet him in the settlement you sent him to. Not before! But in the settlement he behaves like any settler, except that he thanks you from time to time.

Since you can get Sheffield quite early, he always received some sort of armor (Cage Armor or something like that), a laser musket (there are several in the Super Duper) and a bit of ammunition and then he guarded the settlement. Worked well....

He is in Ten Pines and already survived a ghoul attack, and I think he had fun

Fret not friend. You gave his life a new sense of purpose. Had you left him in Diamond City, he'd still be a panhandler, but you gave him a new home and a job. What more could one ask for?

Same happened to me with the Vault-Tec rep. Recruited him in goodneighbor, left goodneighbor soon after (not fast travel). Found his body not far away. Killed by Gunners.

Old problem - if you are near, the NPC will be attacked and has to fight. Either you are near enough to help (which often will fail, because the NPC AI is not intelligent enough) or you fast travel away, in which case the NPC can walk nearby a Behemoth unmolested, because there can be no fight in an unloaded cell. If I send a NPC somewhere, I always fast travel away in another direction.

Sheffield mans the bar at Taffington for me. Two days ago we had this horde of ferals rushing us from the north, and most of my guns were facing the other way where the hospital was. We killed them all, but Sheffield kept dying. I think I had to reload like four times before I managed to save him. Perhaps I should move him somewhere safer ... or fortify Taffington a bit more, which will probably be more fun.
