Reduce experience gain console command

Post » Tue Feb 02, 2016 2:49 pm

Hi everyone,

I really like the game, but I find that the game doesn't scale in difficulty very well. Is it possible to decrease the amount of experience gained through console? I'm sure this can be done with mods, but I'd rather just do it myself via the console without installing a mod if possible.

Thanks.

That sounds to complex for a simple console command though Im just guessing and probably wrong.

I think the best bet is to lower your game difficulty setting. If the game too difficulty, use "easy" or "very easy". If the game not a challenge, use "very hard" as example. Everything you do, you may earn xp, you cannot set global xp as game command. Btw, if you only follow MQ lines, you will find some NPCs a challenge. You need to do some sidequests/misc or radiant quests to make you stronger by lvl up and choose more perks. Find better weapons and armor. Use weapons/armor workbench to make something better. Do sidequests / radiant quests for the Minutemen. Find a missile launcher as well, it happens that this weapon may fix one or two problems.

Cheers,

There was a setting in Fallout 3 that could increase the amount XP required for level up, but i can't remember what it was called.

FWE uses it too, but i can't remember what it was.

Edit: iXPBumpBase
First use "show iXPBumpBase" to see if the setting still exists, and if it does, what it's default value is, and then "set iXPBumpBase to (number)" it to make you level up slower. I think it was higher number than the default to slow down leveling.

Decrease your intelligence. The higher your intelligence, the more XP you will gain from everything.

It can be done with this command player.setav intelligence 1

If it is at one, then it can't be lowered any further.

You can change the game settings that govern XP and leveling with the "setgs" command. "iXPBumpBase" is the gamesetting that determines how much XP is added to the cost of each level up - the first level costs 200 XP, and every level after that adds 75 XP to the cost of the last level (level 2 requires 275 more XP, level 3 requires 350 more XP, and so on). So, if you wanted to level up half as fast, try:

"setgs iXPBumpBase 150"

That'll double the cost added for each levelup. Try messing with the number to change the results - the default is 75. Also, I'm very not sure how this will affect a character that already has a few levels under their belt. I'm also not sure this console command will even work... but it should. Just, save before you change this value and make sure it works how you want.

Yeah, decreasing Intelligence is your best bet. But there could be a side affect when it comes to perks you have selected which are based on Intelligence. It's probably best to do a hard save in the console before lowering Intelligence; give the saved file a descriptive enough name.

I try to keep the game challenging by not using any legendary items with the exception of two recently dropped legendary leather armor pieces that gives +1 to Charisma each. That way I do not have to bother putting on clothes that gives me +2 Charisma for bartering and then switch back to armor before fighting again. There have been many times my character (level 81 legendary) has gone into combat without wearing basic armor. At least that made for an even more challenging experience.

This is an issue I found in all Bethesda games: The gain is optimized for the casual player, i.e. the player who will not want to do all the quests. To let such a player see what he can do with a high level and to make him strong and believable for the end they need to make the gain a bit too high.

I fixed this myself in FO3 - there is a formula how much XP one needs for the next level. This formula can be easily changed in the editor, it is part of the general game settings. If we could do that now (with the FO4Edit, like most of the other mods) I do not know. But with the Geck it will be easy.

That's exactly what I was hoping for, I'll give that a try later. The game is awesome, but at level 12+ you're pretty much shrugging off bullets like they're nothing. This should definitely help, thanks.
