New PC Build For Skyrim

Post » Wed Feb 03, 2016 7:06 pm

Hi all, my 7 year old PC that was built specially for Flight Sim software has recently fried itself, normally I would have tried to save it by replacing the power supply as that was what smoked, however after looking at the latest hardware it was just not worth the effort. The old hardware was state of the art...in 2009 and I found that most of the architecture of the old parts was not even supported any longer. It was a Core i7 cpu but it was one of the earliest 920 D0 chips, the socket was a 1366... iirc, and well, they don't even make MoBo's with that socket anymore. Same with the Vid card,an EVGA GTX 280 with only 1 gig of vram,no where near enough to run Skyrim at full tilt ultra. So,with that in mind I've decided it's time for a fresh up to date build, these are the parts I've spec'd out, I think it will perform well,I want to be able to run at Ultra-High Graphics using the "Real Vision" and ENB mods along with all the other environment upgrades. Any comments or suggestions will be appreciated so I can make purchase adjustments before beginning the build.

Case- Corsair Obsidian 450D

CPU- Intel Core i7-6700K Skylake

MoBo- Asus H170 Pro Gaming LGA 1151

SSD- Samsung 850 EVO 2.5 Sata 1 TB.

HDD-WD Blue 7200 1TB. Data Storage

GPU- EVGA GTX 970 SSC 4 Gig

RAM- G-Skill TridentZ DDR4 3200 16 GB.

Power Supply-Corsair CX750M

O/S- Windows 7 Pro 64bit

Monitor- Sharp 32 in. 1080P

This is what I am looking at through Newegg for PC parts and Best Buy for the Monitor. Thoughts?

The DO stepping i7 920's were very good chips and still more than good enough for Skyrim got one in my second PC and still works great. Are you sure your mobo is fried? Although you can't buy a new one you can certainly pick up a good used one. That old gfx card is laughable though.

Ya,not only the power supply was fried but you could see where it had arc'd across some of the traces on the MoBo,so I'm not even going to bother with trying to repair it. i do agree on the 920 D0 chip, I ran it for 6 of it's 7 years O/C'd to 4.2 Ghz with an Asetek H2O closed-loop cooler on it. It was stable under any load I ever put on it. :)
