Getting the most out of Morrowind (new player)

Post » Thu Feb 04, 2016 11:51 pm

So, I am at Seyda neen and I reached the fort near the village all by myself. I'm facing the following problems:

> I'm naked, and I don't know what to do about it. Is the equipment I'm going to find all related to my level? (Level 1, I mean)

> The grinding done to hit with longswords is a lot. Beside, most of the stuff I find just one hits me (I've found a cave with two people, one whose I was able to take care of, the other with a blunt weapon that smashed me with only one hit).

I'm resorting to killing farmers or npcs all around the world to have a chance to enter the caves. Beside, I'm totally nvde, even if I got high armor as main skill.

> Is unarmored a viable skill alternative to high armor\medium armor\light armor?

> I can't seem to find anywhere a way to ask about the missing taxpayer. Whom I should ask about him?

> How can I improve my personality? If I try to persuade people, they just get mad at me (30 personality). I fail to understand how one should be able to improve it.

> Am I wrong, or if I don't use my major skills I can't level?

> How can I use alchemy and armorer?

> Is there a way to remove the nuissance of the levelling? :)

That's my character:

Yes and No. Head to Arrile's shop. There you can get the basic clothes. armor weapons etc. Many of the items in shops are fixed for particular traders, but some items are based on leveled list. For example, you wlil get high quality clothes from Milie Hasteen's Fine Clothes shop irrespective of your levels. But, items found in caves, tombs etc are mostly based on your levels.

What is your skill in Long Blades? What is your Agility? You need to have atleast 40 in both of the weapon and agility to have more chance of hitting than missing. But as the skill increases, your odds of hitting also improve. By about weapon skill 55, you'll rarely miss. Try hitting mudcrabs and scribs toraise the skill.

> I'm constantly summoning an ancestral ghost, but my conjuration skill doesn't seem to get higher. It didn't get higher even a point even if I summoned the ghost like 25 times (?). Is there a bug?

Hover your mouse over the 'Conjuration' skill and see if the progress bar is filling up. Also, you need to 'successfully' cast the spell for progress in the relevent skill. Failure to cast doesn't progress the skill.

> I can't seem to find anywhere a way to ask about the missing taxpayer. Whom I should ask about him?

The missing taxpayer can be found by searching the coast west of seyda neen. He is hidden among the bushes.

> How can I improve my personality? If I try to persuade people, they just get mad at me (30 personality). I fail to understand how one should be able to improve it.

Attributes can be only raised during level up aside from Enchantments or spells. You get to raise Personality by more than 1 if you raise its corresponding skill more than a couple of times before level up. More info http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Level.

> How can I use alchemy and armorer?

You drag alchemical apparatus on to your character in menu mode. A window opens allowing you to prepare potions. More info http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Alchemy. As for repairing, just drag a repair hammer or repair prong on to your character. Note that you need to have atleast 40 in those skills to be decent at that.

PS: Looking at the screenshot, I see you already got clothes and armors. Just drag the robe/clothes onto your charachter and he wears it. Also, another thing I forgot. Keep an eye on fatigue. If you have low fatigue your chance of success at things drops. So don't run to places or at least avoid running just before combat.

With a personality of 30 you will fail a lot. Use some potions or spells to increase it or just keep practicing. It's all a random number game so you might succeed you might not. The higher the skill the better the chance you'll succeed. For alchemy you need at least a mortar and pestle for armorer you need either a smithing hammer or a tong.

Leveling up major and minor skills is the only way to level, if you level up one of the other skills it wont count towards your level but it will count towards your attribute increase at level time. You use them to help maximize the attribute increase at level up time. If you havnt raised the corresponding skills enough to get the +5 attribute you want you raise some misc skills until you do. If you want to get rid of the min/max pain in the ass leveling you need a mod. I havn't found one that works very well though.

Thank you people. But if world levels with me, what's the point of exploring dungeons?

Morrowind doesn't use the scaling system that Oblivion does. So a cave full of low level NPC's will always be a cave full of low level NPC's. Some areas have high level threats and a very few areas in Bloodmoon do have scaled threats.

I explore dungeons for the excitement of the unknown, the thrill of the challenge and the desire to do everything.

The great thing about the game is that you can make it as hard or as easy as you want.

The easy way:

You were given a package to take to an agent in Balmora. Do it. The driver for the large bug up the hill can get you there without any problems for a small fee. Find the agent and deliver the package. You can get some aid and a lot of good info from him if you ask the right questions. He'll tell you about other agents right in Balmora that will give you even more aid.

Keep the same skills you chose, but arrange them so: Majors-Alchemy, Conjuration, Mysticism, Destruction and Restoration. Minors-Long blade, Heavy Armor, Block, Armorer and Security.

Alchemy is the quickest skill to level up and you make useful potions that you can sell for cash to buy better gear. Buy cheap ingredients and make ever more expensive potions to sell. Better alchemy gear helps too. You can purchase some right in Balmora.

You can cast simple spells over and over to improve your magic skills. If you go to the Mage's guild in Balmora and join, then you can make custom spells to:

-"Summon an Ancestral Ghost for 12 seconds",

-"Trap the soul on target for 10 seconds" and

-"Cause 28 points of fire damage on target for 1 second".

You start with the basic spell for these if you have the majors I advised. Now, if you cast these spells in sequence, then you would also fill a common/greater/grand soul gem with the soul of the Ancestral Ghost. You can then use the soul gem yourself or sell this too. If you spend your time exploring the safe urban areas instead of dying in caves, then you'll find a merchant that sells any number of common soul gems. So this spell "grind" actually makes you a big pile of money.

You can also summon a skeleton and then practice your combat related skills (long blade, heavy armor, block, restoration and armorer) up as high as you want before heading out on an endless number of quests. Good luck!
