So can people please let me know what the Flare Gun does? Is it any use? Or should I just sell it and my stash of flares?

Well it does what Preston says it does. it will call in a couple of minutemen IF they are in the area.

I will fire it up in the air every next several encounters I have whilst going back from Diamond City to Red Rocket and see if it is any good, then report back

You have to be in range of minutemen settlement for it to work. Range is 3 squares (grid on the Pip Boy map) from position flare goes off so you can extend it to 4 if you fire it direction of the settlement.

Also minutemen can be called only once per 24 ours.

Flare gun is also used to fire Brotherhood of Steel flares and call in vertibird once you join.

You are not going to get another one, so you might want to store it somewhere instead of selling even if you are not using it.

Vertibird flares are thrown like a grenade, not fired by the flare gun.

While the minutemen it calls are relatively weak, they are very useful for splitting an enemy groups focus. I called them in a few times (prior to installing a mod that made them level with you and become more useful) just to distract the bad guys whilst I popped a few from a distance.

Thanks to you all for your responses. As was pointed out it is the only one and has a little use by sounds of it so will hold onto it just to fire up and hope for a little help!!

I don't think I've ever found another flare gun. I'd keep it. Plenty of other ways to make caps.
