Does Preston ever give the player a break?

Post » Fri Feb 12, 2016 8:25 am

I have played a lot of Fallout 4 (Xbox One) and I've done a LOT of quests for the Minutemen, like almost 200 quests and I was wondering if you ever get a break from it all.

I want to help all the settlements, but it can be overwhelming trying to manage it all at once and if you try to go at your own pace you can actually fail the quest if you take too long. I feel like Bethesda added a lot of replay-ability, but I feel like the got the proportions all wrong and now there's too much to do.

It'll be quite awhile before we can see DLC roll out, but when we do, what then? I don't want to have to worry about failing quests because I'm off exploring a new place, especially since Bethesda may try for something bigger and better than Fallout 3's DLC (I'm hoping for a Point Lookout style DLC).

He does run out of quests to give, and so does Freedom Radio.
He is a good companion though.

He "does", when? I would've thought the settlements would always need this kind of defense.

I did so many quests for Preston I'm surprised I never got to that point. Thank you.

The pesky Preston stuff has been addressed in the last patch, if you look at the patch notes.

I don't think he was supposed to be so demanding, informing you of settlement issues, ad infinitum.

Not sure if it's been published to all consoles though.

He has been fixed on Xbox One - I only have 1 active quest at a time from him/radio freedom now and the pace has slowed a little that he dishes them out.

Maybe i should give the Minutemen another go then. It was just exhausting the first time.

Either you talk to him or you talk to your troubled settlers.

It's harsh world we're living in. There are always trouble around.

And as usual, I've got something for you.

Another settlement needs your help.

I'll mark it on your map. Go talk and see what happened.

  • Fixed an issue with Minutemen quests repeating improperly, thats the patch note, it doesn't say it quits giving you quests and as a matter of fact i started a new game when the patch came out and i'm level 20, already have half a dozen settlements and i had to send garvey to red rocket all by himself because he still hammers you with quests, the best way to deal with it is to be somewhere he isn't, thats the best way to handle it, but if he's in sanctuary especially, he'll give you one after the other still, so they might of toned it down but if you're starting a new game, there's 30 settlement locations and he will hammer you relentlessly still, you have to send him somewhere you rarely go to, and that slows it down considerably.

Just let them fail, it's not like something important happens either way anyway.

I've not found that, I actually was stuck for a short time as I had no quest at all for my settlers and listening to that bloody flute over and over on Radio Freedom was getting maddening (-;

I quite like them, they are definitely the weakest of the factions despite their artillery but I find them the least annoying to work with.

Doesn't seem like it. He was driving me f***king crazy so I banished him to The Castle. In other words, I don't go to The Castle much.

Defense never ends, but I think Preston's limit is 2,747,863,942 quests. :) Or at least it feels like that.

I always wondered about this fix. "repeating improperly"? what does that even mean. All the MM quests do is repeat. And they have continued since the patch. Okay, I'll admit that he hasn't sent me to the same place 3 times in a row to complete the same quest again and again, but it's early yet.

The quest never end. Don't you know? The SS didn't actually live through the nukes. No, he/she died and the Commonwealth is their purgatory. Preston is apart of this hellish wasteland and you are forever trapped.

I haven't tried the new patch yet, but if you don't want Preston's ever loving quests coming at you....you could fail the quest and just never speak to him again. But I'm pretty sure the new patch makes him less quest-y.

i installed the new patch and started a brand new playthrough, i'm at level 20 now, i have half a dozen settlements i guess and i had to send him to red rocket all by himself cause he was giving me a lot of quests still, i already had one i just did, i had another on the quest log and the moment i fast traveled to sanctuary he was sitting right at the fast travel location and immediately gave me another quest so i sent him to red rocket, so they might of toned it down possibly, maybe he only gives 1 or 2 before you finished the others but he still hammers you with quests and if you're around him he's gonna keep giving them to as fast you finish them. when he's at some remote settlement that you don't go to, it for fact slows down the quests, i've been playing it like that for a while, if he's in sanctuary with you he's relentless.

I don't know for sure but what i noticed, having finished the main game, developed all the settlements and after installing the patch.

Preston gave me one more job then shut up.

Radio Freedom reported that all is quiet.

A second mini quest of Defend the Castle ( with waves of attackers) initiated.

One proper mini quest to defend a settlement occurred.

I suspect that with a new game Preston will badger you up to a certain point but at some stage his badgering should stop.

I'm not sure where that point is. Perhaps when the main game is finished, or maybe when the required number of settlements is obtained, ( can't remember is it 8 that are required?)

(Anyway as many already know you can avoid Preston and turn off the radio freedom transmitter with the switch.)

I noticed that the badgering stopped when i installed the beta version of the last release.

At the time as a test I reverted back to the previous non-beta release and the badgering started up again with Radio Freedom also issuing alerts.
