Melee Build; How do you deal with ceiling mounted turrets?

Post » Fri Feb 12, 2016 5:15 pm

I'm trying a Melee Build with no ranged weapons (I'm still undecided on the explosives, I have not used any so far). The Deathclaw in Concord was not fun :nope:

My latest issue are these ceiling mounted turrets.

I'm only Level 11 and I have not encountered too many of them yet. I'm going after a certain person who's name starts with a K. There are a bunch of ceiling turrets. Even when I am right under them, VATS shows a 0%. I can occasionally jump up and hit them, but they have always killed me before I can kill them. I was able to run past the rest of them and I disabled a couple from a Terminal.

Other than a StealthBoy am I missing anything?

I hit them with my weapon. If they are to high up i will use a weapon like "Righteous Authority", it is a laser rifle. You always have spare fusion cells and it stacks the critical meter quickly, so you can use it with a Melee Vats Crit build. Also throwing a grenade underneath it will take it out quickly. You will have an abundance of this stuff which is easy to use with a melee build.

I did the same thing as you, and ran into the same problem.

I had to pump myself full of chems so that I could one shot them and slow time, and I'd have to run directly underneath them, stare straight up, and swing. After each hallway was cleared I would save.

Kinda funny actually. Who woulda thought that Grognaks arch enemies are laser turrets hahaha.

If you're against using firearms for RP purposes, I recommend using explosives for grounded turrets, and terminals to deactivate ceiling turrets.

At least that's how I would go about it...

If you take a companion you can direct them to deal with turrets and sometimes watch them take a knee, creating a distraction.

However there are a couple of locations that I have come across that are very well protected with energy turrets.

I found the only viable option was to destroy them using a pistol after finding a spot from where i could shoot from cover.

I think the game provided the cover spots for just that purpose.

Many of the other turrets can be easily smashed with a machete.

Another issue would be if you are required to down an aircraft.

Not sure if you can direct a companion to do that.

Well its like my dear old grandad used to say when I was but a nipper, "always . . ." no wait, ah yes *ahem* "never, take a deathclaw gauntlet to a ceiling turret fight". I think that's what he said, he was Scottish so I could be wrong.

If you can't reach it, bypass it.

There are always terminals around so you can shut them off. You just have to find them and not get killed in the process.

This. Melee doesn't work for high turrets. You can stealthboy past (gonna need a lotta them), run past them (doesn't work some places), use explosives (are you going grenade-free, too?), or pack a pistol just for that purpose. I chose a pistol. Most sensible option.

I really don't see the crime in carrying one ranged weapon to deal with turrets. You'll have more than enough ammo anyway since your going Melee.

Perhaps you can do a role play thing.

Don't carry a ranged weapon but when you really need one walk away and mug someone for theirs then dispose of it afterwards.
