Is this a game you constantly have to tend?

Is this game one that you constantly have to tend, and your vault will go to hell in a handbasket if you let it be for too long, or does the game suspend itself when not being played? I'm interested, but I don't want to have to take care of it all the time. I want a game, not a chore, and I am hoping it's the former and not the latter.

Not really. You can be rather casual or a power player, it's up to you. As long as you return to the main menu before closing the app or locking your device. I have been going to the small gears icon for the http://i.imgur.com/LfujnTF.jpg. On that menu is an option to go to the http://i.imgur.com/hYOTQSp.jpg. Go to the Main Menu before closing the app or locking your Phone or Tablet.

That's an useful info, I didn't know I could halt the progress, thanks Sharlikran! Now I don't need to worry about my explorer wandering for hours when I sleep, glad to know I can control how far he goes. :D

No that's not what I mean. You aren't halting anything or pausing the game. You are putting your vault to sleep. After you go to the Main Menu your Vault will consume almost no resources. As I mention in http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1521786-enhanced-vault-dwellers-survival-guide/ under Incidents in the Vault you won't have to worry about getting overrun by Raiders, Radroaches, or fires burning down your Vault. However, I guarantee you any Dwellers you have adventuring will continue to do so until you recall them or they die. You can revive them with Caps.

If you haven't already, I'd read my entire guide. It may be a bit long but there is very little that isn't covered and you will know all the tricks to keeping your Vault running Smoothly. I'm going to be adding some recommendations for your vault as far as population and resources. I'm still working on the details.

I'm pretty sure going to the Main Menu doesn't make a difference: just exit the app at any point and resources stop being consumed -- the game doesn't keep running in the background. (Though adventurers keep adventuring and babies get born, etc, that's all based on time elapsed between opening the game)

Worked fine for me over night, resources were right where I left them.

http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1521534-dwellers-died-the-next-day/

I have had it happen to me. I locked my phone with the app open. I had just tended to my rooms and I was going to cook something. I hadn't been gone more then 10 minutes from my phone. They had full health and I was just slightly above the green line on my resources. When I came back my resources were low and everyone had half radiation damage, and about 20% health.

I had taken screen shots of not only where http://i.imgur.com/04BGLGf.jpg were but the http://i.imgur.com/xcVS4GA.jpg because I was going to talk about it in that thread I linked. I decided not to after I had figured out I could quit to the Main Menu. Try it. When you do and you come back your vault is dark. Once you get in it stays dark for a second and then all the rooms light up as if it was in sleep mode. When I exit to the Main Menu then I have 0 problems. I could even have some of my resources in the red on an alternative save that I am testing theories on. Once I come back hardly anything changed. I'm still in the red but the game didn't suddenly kill off my entire vault. Although it may be working for you it doesn't seem to work consistently for everyone.

That's how it's supposed to work. Sometimes it seems to bug out and keep playing in the background, though, which has left some people totally screwed. Better safe than sorry.

exiting the game doesnt "halt" the resource drain, it merely slows it down, but if feels more like,, the while playing, the resources drain at a highly accelerated rate, so you eventually realize that its almost impossible to keep up with the resource drain while logged in(running as fast as you can to stay in one place) so you become conditioned to get in, grab the resources, then get out.

i swear i spend almost as much time watching the "please stand by" loading screen as i do playing..

and being logged off, does halt the raiders, radroaches and fires...but the incidents seem to get queued up and when you are gone for a while, and when you come back, you have barely enough time to collect your resources before an incident happens within the first 2 minutes of playing.

I'm finishing up with some example of Vaults. One vault is 10 Dwellers and not very efficient. Then I have an efficient 17 Dweller Vault. I am finishing up my 50 Dweller example. I'll make some 25ish, 31ish, and 40ish vaults once my other save games get there.

I deleted my vault, exited the game, came to this forum, and while reading this thread I got a notification saying my resources needed to be tapped...

Go figure...

i think i figured out what was happening to me

my resources were draining so fast, because i had all guys with 1-3 on their special stats in the rooms.

i did this because all my high statted guys, i put in training and was trying to hold out until they reached 10. my agility waitresses finished first and as soon as i put the 10 agility girls wearing +3 outfits into my diners, my food drain almost completely stopped, my food is almost always full to the brim, only when raiders attack does it go down.

my perception people maxed out next and when i put them in the rooms, the same thing, my water stopped draining so fast.

my power was draining extremely quickly, like 200 every 3 minutes., and my strength guys were still not done(tey were behind because i had them training luck for a good amount of time, i was trying to max both luck and strength.) i had 6 guys with 8 strength each and i put them in the power rooms and took the 2-3 strength people out to train and now my energy is hardly draining at all.

TL:DR

the bottom line, you have to put high stat people in your rooms, train them up as soon as possible, then you can safely leave the game alone for long periods of time without resource drain.

Do the freebie lunchboxes end after a while? I got a few from achievements, but now all the achievements only pay out caps.

I got Moira Brown out of it, though. :)
