How do I limit population expansion?

Post » Sun Feb 14, 2016 4:47 am

Now that my radio rooms are properly staffed, there is a periodic influx of new Dwellers.

But eventually this influx will get me to the population cap (near 170 currently) and what happens then?

Will they keep showing up and stand outside unable to be admitted?

The point of putting personnel into the radio rooms was to keep the Dwellers happy, if they keep summoning wastelanders, it's going to be problematic.

Does anyone know how I can limit the personnel entering the Vault and keep the radio entertainments going?

I haven't worked out how to kick unwanted personnel out of the Vault yet, except for sending them out into the Wasteland with no supplies.

Yeah you are basically stuck with sending them out into the wastes to die until Bethesda updates the game.

That or summoning a radroach attach with a failed rush, making sure they have no outfits or gear, and then watch them die.

Yup. No way to limit or turn away. Let'em in, and then send'em right back out. If they die with something you want, they've earned their spot and invite them back. If not, they fertilize the wastes. It's the circle of life.

So basically I'm going to end with a line of people standing outside my Vault and completely unable to take any of them in?

Up to 171 now......

I would have thought there would be a checksum limit on the population number, when I tried to build more residential quarters and hit my quota, it said I was not allowed to build more, even though I still had the physical space to do so.

I'd hope there was something like that in the game for population, this vault is at 200, send no more wastelanders until a space is free.

No, at least since the update when you reach 200, the radio room will no longer call new dwellers, but it will still improve happiness.

I have a death room intended for Radroach infestations -- surrounded by rooms with heavy guns to prevent the spread of the infestation.

I've also moved everyone out of the residencies.

Radroaches tend not to be that predictable, at least in my experience.

They appear anywhere and I usually have to scramble personnel to whatever uninhabited room they are in.

But if they have the misfortune to arrive in a populated room, they're lucky if it's not one of the Steel rooms (dangerous weapons)!

A regular weapon room doesn't handle enemies as well though, I have to stimpack everyone.

I asssume handguns don't faze radroaches much.

is the ability to cheer the dwellers up related to their 'C' stat?

if its not, simply put people in there with a stat of 1 to reduce the chance of a new dweller. have to say, I haven't had much issue keeping people happy without the radio, tbh.

Not sure if it's all Dwellers, but in the Radio Rooms, which generate Happiness, Charisma is the key stat.

If I designate a Dweller a Radio Op, I raise their Charisma to 10 for maximum Happiness production.

Do the radio rooms ever summon the ultra rare characters like Abraham Washington? I got to 187 and the rest of the space in my vault is for those types of character.

Also, if I send unfavoured dweller out into the wastes and they die, does the page with them on ever disappear, like after 24 hours you loose the chance to revive them. Otherwise I'm worried about getting up to a limit of how many dwellers can explore.

In my personal experience, the Radio Room has never summoned an ultra rare.

I don't think the revive page ever vanishes until you make a decision.

While there is no way to limit them (other than the 200 cap), the most convenient ways of getting rid of excess people are sending them to die in the desert, or leaving them inside the vault door and let raiders take care of them. Unlike radroaches, you wont risk anyone else getting tainted by the bad mood in a room when someone dies there. They die, raiders move on, you remove the corpses, and your dwellers can kill off the raiders in the next room. I always have my best geared people who aren't running in a Nuka Cola plant right next to the vault entrance (though any resource room will do of course).
