The Fallout Name Deserves Better

Post » Sun Feb 14, 2016 12:46 am

I have been a Fallout fan since the beginning, but the crashing problem with Fallout Shelter that are not being resolved is really upsetting. From the crashing issue during startup to the crashing issue during gameplay, these issues started from release. The crashing issue for me started on Friday morning (July 10). The update that was release on July 10 did resolve a few issues, but not the crashing issues (not to be mention created a few new problems). I understand if these crashing issues are caused by people playing the game on incompatible devices, but that's not always the case. It would be nice if we heard a comment on the forums, and/or twitter that shows that these crashing issues are being worked on. This game and the Fallout name deserves better!

Can you give us some info, are you using one of the new type of Iphone Ipad or older ones, i tried using an Ipad 2 even with it not being supported i know, and that one just cant support more than 18 dwellers stable in any way, closed everything running in the background and i just have to accept it is to outdated for that game.

However i have noticed a lot of people are unaware of the Home button can be pressed 2 times fast and you can see all the apps currently open, and you can just flip them upwards to close them.

Fallout Shelter ran perfectly on my iPad 4 until yesterday morning (July 10). Now the app crashes on the loading screen. I understand the issues with people trying to run the app with incompatible devices, but the problem also affect people using devices that are compatible. I am running Fallout Shelter on a iPad 4 with iOS 8.4.

Technically, this isnt bethesdas fault, its Apples. The new IOS 8.4 update might have changed some Operating System Code that Fallout Shelters was dependant upon. Apple should have done a better job communicating these code changes to people like Bethesda so they could prepare a patch for it, but sadly this seems to not be the case. As the new IOS update hit only very recently, it'll probably take the team a little bit more time to issue a patch.

Personally I'm skipping 8.4 as I'm hearing nothing but bad news about it, while gaining next to nothing from the update thats actually useful. It's also possible that the IOS update makes the OS use more RAM. If this is true, then that means the original amount of RAM the game was designed to run on isnt available anymore, thus inducing crashes. I do believe that this is the most likely case, as people who had no problem playing the game before on devices that barely met the requirements are now having real issues. Meanwhile, the people with more recent stuff like the Iphone 5s and 6 had more RAM to spare than what was taken away, which would explain why they don't seem to be having that many problems.

So to sum it up, this isn't on Bethesda, it's kinda on Apple. Unfortunately, all we can do is hope that Bethesda is aware of this and working hard to fix it.

FYI, the loading screen crash issues were mostly solved by Bethesda's recent patch to the game, as mine no longer crashes at all. It used to crash every single time before.

Sorry, this almost certainly isn't an 8.4 issue as the game does run on 8.4 - I'm running it on 8.4.

if it was an 8.4 issue it would either run or it wouldn't - simple as that. If it crashes upon loading, that's likely to be it running out of Ram.

Try starting a new Vault, that way you'll know if its an 8.4 issue or not.

True, if it was a purely coding thing it wouldnt work on any 8.4 device, you're right  Didnt think of that!

But having an OS use more RAM after an update isnt unheard of. It could be effecting those with vaults that just happened to be big enough to be pushed over the RAM limit due to 8.4 potentially using more RAM, thus leading to only some 8.4 users experiencing crashes. Due to the fact that alot of 8.4 users are experiencing issues that weren't present before the update, issues that should have been fixed by the new patch, the logical conclusion is that something to with the new update has thrown things out of whack.

But we definitely agree on the fact that this seems to be a RAM issue right? Man, I love technical troubleshooting sometimes! Except when I have the problem. Screw that :/

Yeah, the fly in that ointment is that I was experiencing a lot more crashes on 8.3! 8.4 seemed to help in that regard, until I had over 50 dwellers.

Although that said, the last patch hit just after 8.4, so in hindsight I may not have been using 8.4 with the original release as long as I think.

Honestly, just having a different version or some kinda "smart" feature where it can tell what version apple device you're using would be nice. It could auto scale down the graphics or such, or reduce the resolution of the screen.

If ye be playing on a potato, it's gonna look like a potato. Beth might as well get their moneys worth.

Fun fact: this game cant run on devices with 512 MB of ram or less. That means this game cant even run on the Xbox 360. That's ridiculously absurd for a mobile game where all you do is manage a vault.

I agree with you there. Quite how it manages to consume around 250mb of Ram (that's around what I have free when I run the app) for a game like this is beyond me, even more so considering its at a quarter of the dweller cap.

Also totally agree it should scale itself back, don't both with the fancy animations or '3D' effect to the rooms, hell, even a 2D or fake 3D would have sufficed.

I think its because the game (I believe, I could be wrong) Runs in 1080P at 60fps. That would explain the silly amount of RAM consumed. Dropping the FPS by half would totally make the game playable on 512 MB devices, and IMO is not needed on a game like this. On shooters and racing games, yes. On a base management game, not so much.

Have you ever scrolled all the way in and just watched a single dweller move? They have very detailed movements, as far as how moving should effect the rest of your body, and are crazy high res. I think the game should swap out the moving 2D models with the non-moving cutout ones far before zooming ALL the way out.

tbh, I wouldn't have thought FPS would make a difference (and I don't think it runs at 60fps on mine!), what would make the difference is removing a lot of the animations, removing the 3D effect to the rooms. I don't know if they're scaling textures down as I'm sure they have hi-res textures for the retina devices and judging by the 600mb install footprint, I'd hope they are generating scaled down textures for non-retina devices.

Its possible to work out what device you're running on so its perfectly possible to auto-scale the graphics, which most other games do.

That leaves two possibilities:

1) The game was rushed and released really before it was ready

2) Bethesda need to employ better mobile developers.
