Quoting Gamespot News Update

http://www.gamespot.com/videos/fallout-shelter-makes-51-million-in-two-weeks-gs-n/2300-6426054/

"Bethesda's mobile game, Fallout Shelter, made a ton of money in its first two weeks on the market. According to a research firm, it made $5.1 million."

Has to be said, the reference to 'a research firm' is a bit vague,

but whatever the number is, Bethesda did well.

And it's not even out on Android yet.

A rather successful 'fun promotion'...

Quite impressive ... hopefully that means we can get some continued additions to the excellent FS game ... reading the comments about the game from the "real gamers" is quite amusing as well as they are going off the usual deep end whenever a mobile game is successful :D

They would have made double the amount of that money if they did some more QA work and performance tweak. Triple amount if added some more endgame contents and replayability.

Well, it is their first attempt ... maybe they can continue to enhance this one and now they have incentive for the next one ... we learn by doing sometimes

They (Bethesda) grossly underestimated potential of Fallout themed mobile game. Free to play mobile gaming is rising sun of gaming industry. PC/console games will be much less important.

Maybe within few years, sales revenues of Fallout game on mobile phone will exceed that of Fallout released on PC/console combined.

Fallout Shelters did not get enough devlopment resource and attention that it deserved. So many bugs and rough edges and too small scale. Serious lack of polish.

I hope that Bethesda will learn from its mistake on mobile gaming and do better next time for Fallout franchise on mobile platform.

It's a cute game, simply made and designed to promote Fallout 4.

In those terms it has succeeded beyond its wildest dreams.

I saw that suggestion that mobile gaming would replace console and PC gaming on the Gamestop link as well and that is highly unlikely ... the typical successful AAA game on consoles/pc will make hundreds of millions in their first few weeks (not tens) ... this factor of 10 difference will keep companies with a strong console/pc presence in that space ... that said, as Sofajockey noted, a mobile game can be a successful marketing tool (and a revenue generator of its own) ... I think we can expect to see more companies use mobile games to supplement their console/pc/online titles and not replace them

Now mobile gaming is changing surface of gaming industry. I understand that many traditional gamers are skeptical of future dominance of mobile gaming over PC/console gaming, but in some Asian countries, it is already happening. See China, South Korea, etc.

The overall revenue of mobile gaming is exceeding that of console/(non online) PC gaming in such countries.

I don't dispute the importance and revenue of some mobile games ... however, I am not aware of any mobile title (even the ubiquitous Angry Birds and Minecraft) that has made it into the AAA revenue range ... a game like Grand Theft Auto 5 grossed over a billion in revenue ... other Bethesda AAA titles are likely in the range of 300-600 million ... that is a big haul for mobile games right now ... as the units become more powerful and people are willing to pay for full price games on mobile it could replace the others, but I don't think we are there quite yet (certainly not on the Android front which is the majority of the market)

There are already three mobile games that grossed more than $1 billlion US dollar on year 2014. Candy Crush Saga at $1bn, Puzzle & Dragons at $1.5bn and Clash of Clans at a startling $1.8bn. (source: UK guardian) And they make such a huge money every year. On the countray, AAA PC/console title takes 3 to 5 years to earn $0.3-0.6 bn, which is about $0.1-0.2 bn per each year.

So top mobile games already dwarf PC/console AAA titles like GTA or Dragon Age or Skyrim in yearly revenue base.

There will be more and more mobile games that will exceed revenues of PC/console AAA titles, every year.

If done right, Fallout themed game on mobile phone may have exceeded Fallout 4 game on PC/console in revenue.

I agree that mobile is a big part of the gaming scene but I do not wish to see it become either/or with mobile and console/pc gaming ... they both have advantages and disadvantages ... I have been enjoying FS but now that I am at 200 well armed dwellers I have little to do but buff them up ... once that is complete I have nothing to do ... the console/pc games still offer a depth of play that mobile has yet to rise to ... after the hundred hours+ of Fallout 3 gaming I still have fond memories of the end sequence ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tzpgMzP9pIg) ... it goes without saying that this would be a spoiler if you have any intention of playing FO3 and have not reached the end

Mobile games are still developing and have yet to consistently reach the power or immersiveness of a Fallout, Elder Scrolls, Bioshock, etc ... personally I would like to see the two genres work cooperatively together ... the Fallout franchise is big enough to support games on both platforms:

- Open World RPGs like Fallout and Elder Scrolls - this is still best implemented on the PC/console where the big screen and expanding space and capabilities offer the best gameplay and immersiveness

- Tower Defense - this is a mobile genre that could easily pick up elements from a PC/console franchise to implement a paid or FTP game

- Simulation like FS - I think this is an excellent first attempt but would like to see more depth in expansion of this title or in FS2

- Open World Exercise programs like Zombies Run - this could be an interesting genre for Fallout ... especially if they could somehow link your finds from the exercise explorations back to a console/PC game (go for a 2 mile walk using GPS on your phone and collect various ammo and crafting supplies which are then available in your other game)

- Turn Based Strategy and Real Time Strategy - kind of the opposite of what Blizzard did with Warcraft I think the FO universe could easily support these genres on either mobile or PC or both

I play and buy lots of games on mobile as well as PC so I like both platforms and would like to see both get some gaming love :D

Note: one other interesting addition to Fallout could be ebooks and audiobooks ... I very much loved the Blizzard audio book for The Order that accompanied the release of D3
