I apologize in advance if this question has been covered ad nauseum before - I couldn't find anything that seemed pertinent.

Here goes.

I am trying to free up space on my C drive. I am running Windows 7. Can I move or delete saved game files from the users/[name]/My Documents/My Games/Fallout4/saves directory without interfering with the Fallout 4 application's ability to write new ones and read the remaining ones? Similarly, can I replace deleted saved game files by copying them from a backup? Or must saved game files be generated directly by the Fallout 4 application?


Note that I'm new-ish to PC, so if the answer is complicated, please speak slowly.

Yes you can move/delete the save game files, just be sure to keep your most current one in the folder after you remove the rest. I would just copy the whole Fallout 4>Saves and put it on a different drive. Once you do that, go back into your saves arrange icons by date, and only keep the latest few saves. The save game folder does stack up fast, Mine was over 5gb....

Yes - I am too on Windows 7. It is quite simple: Go into Explorer, change the display options to 'Details' and the sort option to sort by date. Then you should see all your saves in chronological order. Decide how many recent saves you want to keep, then mark the rest and move them somewhere else, on a USB stick or another disk. It does not matter. I usually put them into a RAR archive or in another folder. This also is good for the game, since many saves cause strange bugs. You can restore your saves from where you put them at any time.

I have about 2 months of saves stored in .rar archives on my external drive but I'll probably never actually use them, it's just for peace of mind. They take up a ton.
