I'm at the point where I need to join a faction, and I'm not sure which one to join. I thought about saving here, then playing out a faction, then coming back to the save and joining another faction, until I've done them all. Has anyone tried this?

I'd sooner just play different characters with styles that fit in with each faction.
I joined all factions and worked for them but only when I had an option to avoid doing something that I consider really bad. There are special options for such cases, so npc can send you to work with another faction, or you can get an option to betray one of them. I did not try to play only with one faction.
If you go to that point when your choice can change the ending, then you can make a save and try to do it with another faction later. Should not be a problem.
Theres a pretty detailed guide as too exactly how to do the various missions with save points to see all the endings over on Gamefaqs. I used it to get the Platinum, and now I'm going back to play the game in whatever way interests me, only following a collectible guide so I don't miss any Magazines this time.
be warned there are spoilers in this guide tho

I have at least tried to play all 4 factions.
The two I enjoyed are the BOS and the Institute.
I found the MM dull.
I found the RR.... well let's just say I found that there are just some things I am unable to roleplay.
I haven't but plan to.
I have done the Institute side and BoS. I have one character who will go all the way through with the RR. And my next character will join the MM. My current one will likely join the BoS. I was not a complete fan of the ending but this character seems to suit that one best.
