Disable the wind rush

Post » Tue Feb 16, 2016 12:19 am

The persistent wind rush in the game is way to loud, it drowns out everything. Turning down effects turns off everything. Is there an INI to disable, console command, delete an audio file in data?

I managed to disable one specific wind noise by going into my Oblivion > Data > Sound > FX > Ambient folder, and then listening to all the wind noises in that folder. There was one particular noise which used to drive me crazy when I gamed on PS3, because it was too repetitive. Nature is not repetitive, wind is never repetitive. One day I had a brainstorm. I'm on PC now, not PS3. :lightbulb: I tried searching, and then found the noise that bugged me, and then Cut-Paste it into another folder, just in case problems showed up.

Try it OP. Go into that folder and try removing any wind noises. Don't delete them though, just move them into another folder and see if the game still works.

It exists, but you can't find it without using a third-party utility. It's is located inside your Oblivion - Sounds.bsa. To access the folder you'll have to unpack your .bsa into loose files. You can then listen to the sound files until you find the one you're looking for.

I use http://www.nexusmods.com/oblivion/mods/3117/? There's a few others but this is the one I'm most comfortable with.

That's weird, I wonder why I'm able to get in there. I never installed any software like this. Maybe the Anthology disc allows me to get into those extra folders.

The wind is already disabled in Wrye. It is the wind gust that is the problem, it is too loud and turning down effects or masters, turns down everything. I unpacked wind gust in sound.bsa, used Audacity to de-amplify all 13 wmv then place the folder in data on a new game, result no change. The ingame wind gust completely drowns out the podcasts that I like to listen to and turning that up drowns out important ingame audio.

This may not be the problem but I'll mention it anyway. Did you make sure to put the file in the right folder? You can't just place it in Data. You need to recreate the same folder structure Bethesda used in the .bsa. For example, if your file was located in the Sound > fx > ambient > regions > wind > mountain folder you will need to create new folders that match Bethesda's folder structure, otherwise the game cannot find it.
