"Weapon Accuracy": Is The Game Making Me Miss?

Post » Thu Feb 18, 2016 8:13 pm

Let me state at the outset, I'm a noob to Fallout. I don't use VATS, I play this game like I play Call of Duty or Destiny; it's a FPS.

So here's the problem: The same thing seems to keep happening to me. I line up a shot; I squeeze the trigger on my controller; somehow, even though the target is centered on my screen, I still miss. Sometimes this happens in situations where it should be impossible to miss (super-mutant. motionless at 10 yards). I can only draw the conclusion that the game itself is cheating.

Is this how the Accuracy statistic works? Does the game actually randomize whether my shots hit or miss, when it looks to me as though I'm dead on target? (And is this how I sometimes make a shot that I swear was off the mark?)

If this is the case; I wish it would stop doing that.

No, accuracy doesn't make a dice roll in real-time combat, only in VATS. But are you aiming down your sights, or aiming "from the hip"? Hip-fire accuracy is it's own thing, and it's designed so that the crosshair reflects the bullet spread - it's not precise, but with the right weapon mods and perks you can make it pretty tight.

And if you're aiming at really far off targets, they might just be out of range.

Yep, mod your weapons to improve their accuracy. I mostly avoid VATS and I start modding my weapons as soon as I hit Sanctuary.

I also noticed that some Bullets even when the Enemie is close just dont count. Fully modded Gauss Rifle and Aiming via Standard Scope on low Range and no Hit while i see only the Body in my Scope. Gauss is for me just the worst Example. Hunting Rifle and even Pistols it happends. All non-Vats. The Shooting still needs some Improvements.

First of all, check the stats of your weapon. Particularly, the range and accuracy. For fair accuracy, the number should be over 60. 85 or above means very good accuracy. And above 95 is exceptional. Mods which specifically increase accuracy are sights and scopes. Attach a sight or a scope to a weapon and you'll get a high increase in accuracy.

Range also matters. Some weapons like the shotgun have a very short range so when using these on an enemy quite far away will not work. Many guns have barrels which can be modified to increase the range.

And yes, you will be more likely to miss in VATS than in real time, but like you said you don't use VATS. May i know the specific weapons which cause a problem with your accuracy. You can also post their stats here.

I wonder if Spread is still a thing. In previous games, weapons were innaccurate at lower Skill levels, but became more accurate as your skill increased. However, Spread wasn't affected by Skill. This meant that a weapon with high Spread would always have high Spread.

Now, Spread was implemented as a cone, the size of which was determined by the Spread statistic. Any time you fired a shot, the projectile would travel a path somewhere in that cone. Lower Spread meant a smaller cone, which meant more accurate shots.

Now, in relation to Fallout 4,we have no idea how the Accuracy stat is determined. It may not properly account for the Spread of the weapon (assuming that Spread is still a thing), so your shots may be missing because of that. I have no idea if that's the case, but it's the only thing that I can think of.

I noticed that when i filled out the hipfire perks my accuracy really improved when hip firing.

I tried shooting at a wall but the results aren't very indicative.

So i directed a companion to stay and used them for target practice.

The blood spurts, companion reaction and what the aim box does seems to indicate whether a hit is registered or not.

Target practice very short video.

Shouldn't that be a flaw in the whole VATS. There's no reason it should make a dice roll whether you hit or not. Sure the percentages are important in VATS but being close range and still missing in vats is completely nonsensical.
