getting a steam version of a non steam game you own.

Post » Sun Feb 21, 2016 1:13 am

I own a pre steam cd copy of Morrowind and installed it this morning on my new laptop that has Windows 10. However i am unable to play it due to an error about needing to be an admin, despite being an admin. This error seems to be a windows update that blocks drm elements or something and seems to be unsolvable.

Therefore i was wondering if there was a way of downloading the steam version, without buying it again?

Ha! No!

Try setting the Morrowind.exe "run as Administrator" in the properties. Even if you are the admin of your system, you won't launch the applications automatically as admin.

Tried. Failed.

The launcher starts, but pressing play on the launcher menu doesn't

instead of setting the launcher .exe as admin, try the main .exe?

Only a reletive handful of games can be re-registered on Steam.

There's a list somewhere.

Does get updated, though not very regularly and not all keys for the listed games work (eg: Some GTAIV keys have a different number of characters and won't work with Steam)

Did you try running it in compatibility mode? I'd choose XP1.

I've tried all the compatibility options. Still not working.

Guess i will need to wait until Morrowind is on Steam sale.

Windows 10. I believe they have removed support for some drm software that was needed for many older cd based games.

At least that is what i gathered looking online.

Have you thought about purchasing the PC version of The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind from gog.com? Or are you not interested in purchasing another copy?

As far as I can tell (from my 3 retail copies - Polish base game, Polish GOTY and English GOTY) Morrowind used simple CD-check and not some "resident" DRM mechanism. It also works on Win10, even without admin rights. I have the game outside Program Files (x86), of course.

In Windows 10, they removed support for DRMs that were installing deep into the OS - SafeDisc and Securom. They stated that those DRMs were somewhat insecure, and paired with the fact that such DRMs were installed deep in the OS, meaning it could make the system more vulnerable to attacks.

He said he'd buy a new copy on Steam, when it was on sale.
