The pecking order of Daedric Princes

Post » Sun Feb 21, 2016 12:13 am

I was just wondering if someone could attempt to summarize the pecking order and inter-relationships of the Daedric Princes.

Which Princes are known to work together, and to which extent? For example, Azura, Mephala and Boethiah evidently worked together on the Chimer/Dunmer project.

Which of them have enmity for one or more of the others? Presumably Meridia must despise Molag Bal, for instance.

I can't remember where, but I once read that Mehrunes Dagon is not held in high respect by most Daedric Princes. Something about him being less cunning at subterfuge than the others.

In what sense are Hermaeus Mora and Mephala 'siblings'? Does this signify shared interests, similar natures, an alliance, or something else?

And finally, which of the Princes do you consider to be the most powerful? I personally think Azura or Hermaeus Mora must be the strongest. My thinking is that Azura has a successful record of influencing Mundus on a large and decisive scale. She is the matron goddess of the Khajiit and probably the most significant of the Reclamations in Morrowind - certainly the one responsible for the fall of the Tribunal and return of Daedra worship as Morrowind's dominant religion. Considered a 'good' Daedroth, she alienates a lot less potential worshippers than many other Princes. Hermaeus Mora, on the other hand, could possibly be considered the most powerful because, as the saying goes: knowledge is power. He knows much more than the other Princes and is thus able to influence events more wisely and decisively (i.e. gaining dominion over the Last Dragonborn).

"How typical. You mortals love to take a pebble of information and construct entire realms of conjecture upon it. Your lore of those disparate beings that you lump together as "daedra" is based on nothing -- lies and half-truths told by traitors, rebels, miscontents and weaklings who have had the misfortune to become involved with mortals. Or with Mehrunes Dagon. Do not speak his name to me again. The Master of Scum. The pawn of every Prince of true power, the dupe of every schemer in the Nineteen Voids. Do you think you know anything of the politics, factions, feuds, vendettas, wars of Oblivion? Do you think Oblivion such a simple place, that the tale of the loyalties of a great people such as the Mazken could be encompassed in a brief tale?" - http://www.imperial-library.info/content/interview-two-denizens-shivering-isles

Cooperation between Daedra:

The http://en.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Ring_of_Khajiit has been associated with both Merida and Mephala.

Curing Vampirism in Morrowind required a deal with Molag Bal, but the cure itself came from Vaermina. http://en.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:A_Cure_for_Vampirism#Quest_Stages

There was also the alliance between the Princes to stop Jygglagg by turning him into Sheogorath.

Relations between the Daedric Princes: http://en.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:The_House_of_Horrors in Skyrim is to corrupt a priest of Boethiah, and http://en.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Azura%27s_Quest in Morrowind is to prevent Sheogorath from disturbing one of her priestesses.

There is also a http://en.uesp.net/wiki/Daggerfall:Oblivion of each Prince's allies and enemies, but this was created 20 years ago for Daggerfall, so it might not be an accurate list of what Bethesda's current idea of relations between the Princes. (For example, it does not say that Boethiah and Molag Bal are enemies)

Mehrunes Dagon:

I can't find any information that says that Mehrunes Dagon is disrespected for his lack of subterfuge.

Mephala and Hermaeus Mora:

Strength of the Daedric Princes: While it's hard to say which is the strongest, Peryite is considered one of the weakest Princes: http://en.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Peryite

"Engineering a situation where the Dragonborn has no choice but to deal with him" is not "gaining dominion". Like dragons and the concept of mortality, Free Will is something Hermy simply cannot comprehend due to his nature. Azura, this other so-called "most powerful Prince", is powerless to stop you from unbinding her Star from her, and I doubt Hermy has the power to truly minionize a Dragonborn unwillingly.

Can Hermy stop me from dropping the Mysterium Xarxes in the Sea of Ghosts as soon as I leave Septimus's outpost?

In any pecking order, Popo is always at the top.

But in seriousness, aside from Jyggalag, I don't think it's a question of which Prince is most "powerful." Sheogorath might be able to dupe Hircine or Dagon, but would he get the drop on Azura or Hermaeus Mora? Considering they're limited to their spheres, I would imagine it's more of a game of Rock - Paper -Scissors, where certain Daedra are more likely to get the upper hand on others on account of their natures.

Of course, Molag Bal's quest was hostile and aggressive, whilst Azura's quest, as I recall, was more of a friendly wager between the two Princes. http://www.imperial-library.info/content/16-accords-madness suggests that Sheogorath is fond of making such bets with other Princes.
