Crashing only on 1080p?

Post » Mon Feb 22, 2016 2:13 am

Hi,

I seem to have a problem playing Fallout 4 on 1080p. The game will randomly crash, sometimes after 5 minutes, other times after an hour or two, either to the desktop with a driver failure message, or it will crash the entire computer and I will have to restart the computer.

The settings that I play on 1080p don't matter, since the crashes occur even when I play on the lowest possible settings.

The funny part is that if I lower the resolution just one notch to 1600 x 900, the game will never crash even after an entire day of gameplay. I can run the game at the absolute maximum settings, even setting things like godrays to ultra, and the game will never crash.

But as soon as I so much as touch 1080p, whatever the settings, I will crash eventually.

I have monitored my temps and all seem fine, I have the latest drivers, the latest game patch, and I don't run any mods. Other intensive games like GTA 5 run well at max settings on 1080p. Only Fallout 4 has this problem.

Any solutions?

Have yoiu tried to delete all the ini files on those two folders and validate your game cache files after?

No. Okay, I will try that now. In the second folder you mention, I am going to delete the single ini file in the folder \common\Fallout 4\Fallout 4. I am assuming that is what you meant?

what resolution does your monitor support and at what refresh rate , there's a big difference in the load from 1600x900 to 1920x1080 , the higher res might be too much for your system to handle , and if your trying to dsr that res you need to use the right dvi/hdmi cable

Thank you for your post. My monitor plays at 1080p @60. I don't think the problem is coming from my hardware since I am able to play other demanding games at 1080p at maximum detail. It is only Fallout 4 that has an error.

I was able to run the game at 1080p for a little under two hours after doing what mark5917 recommended. I will continue to test it since the game has previously ran that long and then crashed, so I am not sure I am crash-free yet. Once I have run the game for 4-5 hours in one instance, I will assume the problem has been fixed. I will post back. Fingers crossed!

if the driver is failing then reinstall it , you really cant go by "other games run at max " so fo4 should too , different engine , different game ,

could be a mod issue , a setting (probably hbao+and or weapons debris ) ,

you dont say what hardware you have so who knows ?

Yes any ini file(s) you see on those folders. If it works (and i hope so), just don't touch those files anymore. The game reacts very strange if you alter things in there!

That was my problem in first place as i got the game and it worked. Then i tried to change some lines related to Vsync, and the game crashed with a black screen and no error message.

Go figure... :P

Anyway, after that unfortunate event, the game runs stable over 3 months now!

It's all right there in his DXDiag, friend. Everything looks okay (and his nVidia drivers are even newer than mine).

His hardware is exposed to us (in excruciating detail) in the DXDiag report!
But, thank you for trying to be helpful, anyway...

My advice to the OP would be to go to the nVidia Control Panel and adjust the slider that controls the global 3D game setting.
Set it all the way to "Maximum High Performance".
You can then go in and adjust every line individually if you wish.
I have each line set for performance, with all optimizations enabled.
The nVidia Variable VSync is a blessing. I recommend you use it.
If your Frames Per Second ever fall below 60 it disables VSync temporarily. Beautiful; just what ya need...

With my nVidia Control Panel optimized, and set to 'single display maximum performance', I have NEVER had a crash yet (approaching 500 hours).
Your drivers are newer than mine (mine are dated 12/16/2015) but mine are WHQL - the only kind I'll use!
Anyway, nVidia has just released a whole new WHQL driver suite and both you and I should probably update to it.
Do that, and setup your Control Panel for max performance, and we'll see what happens...

Personally, I have no mods and I don't use any antialiasing - maybe that's why the game runs so well for me, never falling below 60 FPS.
And never crashing.
FO4 is harder on your CPU than your vidcard, anyway...
My CPU gets insanely hot while playing.
